hello, i'm working with suse 9.2, hpoj 0.91-123.2, sane 1.0.14-5. i can't find a way for correctly installing my two hp-devices, psc1210 and officejetk80. there ist no problem, if i install only one device. printing and scanning with ptal works absolutly correct. the problem starts, if i try to install both devices. the ptal-entry for the psc1210 is lost. i can only see mlc:usb:k80, eben then, when i first install psc1210 and follow with k80. in the last case using psc1210 is furthernow not possible - no printing, no scanning. is there any way to fix the problem ? thanks for help eckart |

I cannot get hplip_probe to work on my debian (unstable kernel 2.6.7 or 2.6.9) to detect net printers, no network packet seems to be emmitted. However, I know the IP addresses of the printers, is there a way I can probe a specific address to get the url to put in cups ? -- Erwan David ========================================================== Trusted Logic Tel: +33 1 30 97 25 03 5 rue du Bailliage Std: +33 1 30 97 25 00 78000 Versailles Fax: +33 1 30 97 25 19 France |

hi, my g85 is now running with hplip. main problem was that after an kernel upgrade printing on usb was no longer possible. i then switch from ptal to hplip. but /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp did not find the printer (a g85). the reason was that at usb level the printer was not detected, though i powered the printer on and off, unplugged and replugged it . looking through all the usb and hotplugged settings showed nothing severe except there was no printer found. now - for some reason (one of the usb ports at my box may be malfunctioning, or the fact that i just set up the printer in cups) not quite clear to me - the printer is recognized and the rest of setting it up took some minutes. by the way is the printer.c stuff from ptal still necessary for hplip? thanks and ciao manfred |

hi, thanks for the fast clarification question from cory meisch and till kampeter. the printer is a officejet g85. the ptal service is stopped. according to previous experiences with the g85 i unplugged and replugged it. the printer is via usb connected to my linux box. are any additional listings necessary? ciao manfred Cory Meisch wrote: >Did you stop the ptal service? have you tried unplugging and plugging >the printer back in? Is your device on the parallel port? If yes, then you still have to stay with HPOJ for some time, because parallel support is still under developemnt. But it is at the front of the line because it's urgently needed by the distros. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have installed hplip-0.8.4 on slackware 10.0 successfully, so I'm going to explain how. First of all we need just cups and python (no *-devel packages are required) that are present on slackware CDs/DVD; then it's necessary to download PyQt and net-snmp. I've found these packages on http://www.linuxpackages.net. Install everything with the usual installpkg packagename.tgz (or upgradepkg --install-new packagesname.tgz). Download the source code for hplio-0.8.4 at http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/, and follow the instruction provided in Step 2 at http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/install.php except for point 10. Infact Slackware doesn't have the directory /etc/init.d so the "make install" command is not able to put hplip there. But /etc/init.d/hplip is a soft link to /usr/hplip/hplip.sh so you can create it in the normal slackware "init" position: ln -sf /usr/hplip/hplip.sh /etc/rc.d/rc.hplip. So type "/usr/hplip/hplip.sh restart" or "/etc/rc.d/rc.hplip restart" and than follow Step 3 to install the printer. To make your system initialize the printer every time you power on, you have to modify file /etc/rc.M. Since hplip has to start before the spooling system start, it's necessary to have something like this: =================================== # Start the HP driver hplip. if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.hplip ]; then ~ /etc/rc.d/rc.hplip restart fi =================================== before this =================================== # Start the print spooling system. This will usually be LPRng (lpd) or CUPS. if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups ]; then ~ # Start CUPS: ~ /etc/rc.d/rc.cups start elif [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.lprng ]; then ~ # Start LPRng (lpd): ~ . /etc/rc.d/rc.lprng start fi =================================== Hope everything is clear, and many thanks to Cory and the others for this piece of software. Hello, what we did up to now to get HPLIP built on 64-bit platforms: 1. Add /usr/lib64 to CUPSSEARCHPATH to get the CUPS backend "hp" installed under /usr/lib64/cups/backend on 64-bit architectures. This is the directory where the other CUPS backends are installed on 64-bit architectures. Here the diff (too long lines are wrapped here): ------------------------------------------------------------------ --- backend/hp/configure.in.ORG 2004-12-16 01:13:19.000000000 +0100 +++ backend/hp/configure.in 2005-01-12 10:35:37.079406203 +0100 @@ -20,7 +20,7 @@ # Checks for typedefs, structures, and compiler characteristics. Add --libdir=%_libdir to the ./configure call. %_libdir expands to /usr/lib on 32-bit architectures and to /usr/lib64 on 64--bit architectures. I recommend to add at least a note to the installation instructions regarding 64-bit architectures. As far as I know, the HP 3030 has FAX and the HP 3020 doesn't. So does that mean that the HP 3020 actually works "Perfectly"? |

Sounds promising, but why is the HP 3020 listed as working "Mostly" instead of "Perfectly"? What isn't working with this model? |

Additionally: It is no real solution to have both HPOJ and HPLIP installed to have parallel port support via HPOJ because both cannot run at the same time. It doesn't work if a user has an old parallel port device (which needs HPOJ) and a new USB device (which needs HPLIP). I think there schould be at least a generic parallel port support in HPLIP (perhaps by omitting some inkjet maintenance functions if this functions are complicated to be implemented for some old parallel port devices). The crucial point is that after switching to HPLIP no functionality which was present before in HPIJS+HPOJ is lost. If this is not possible I would appreciate it if the reason is explained in the documentation because otherwise the users may become really upset if known functionality is no longer present without any reason. (My DJ 520 from 1993 will never die). > We cannot declare the parallel port as obsolete. Many of our customers > still have parallel-port HP inkjet or multi-function printers. My HPOJ 1170C from 1998 stills goes strong, and my year-old OJ 7130 is still a babe in the woods by any comparison. While the 7130 has USB, I steadfastly refuse to use it for any of a number of reasons, and I have the card that uses the LIO port to make a parallel port. This will never change unless/until I am simply forced away from parallel port. But if that happens, I sure don't want it to be because of available software. jbh |
