I have used hpijs with ghostscript to print. If I print to a file "prn" & then send the print file directly to the printer cat prn > /dev/usb/lp0 I find that that host-based preparation time is only about 10% of the time to print a page. So it does not seem to be the case that cpu processing is the dominant factor. Clearly, either HP or Microsoft, has some algorithm that they will not reveal to the Linux community. Would an all-in-one, such as the PSC2355, perform like the WinXP driver? That printer is PCL3 based instead of LIDL for the 1100/1200/1300 series. |

This device class is host-based, which means the PC does most of the processing instead of the printer. Host-based printers are slow and hpijs which is included in hplip would not be any faster. You can't compare hpijs to windows because they are two different drivers. Hpijs is open source while windows is closed source. The hpijs driver while functional, cannot expose all the IP that is in the close source driver. Hpijs does offer parity with windows, but not with low-end host based printers. See linuxprinting.org and hpinkjet.sf.net/hpijs_readme.html for more information. |

It didn't compile out of the box (it actually looked for some linux headers... so I didn't look any deeper...). Actually I wanted to get it compiled on FreeBSD, but never found the time to do it (and since the hack for hpoj I posted some months ago worked with my PSC 1210 (for scanning) I didn't have so much pressure...). And just these days I finally exchanged my PSC 1210 with an Epson printer (Epson Stylus Photo R200) and scanner (Epson Perfection 3170) [the HP ScanJet 2400 didn't work with SANE at all, I had already bought the ScanJet and was completely surprised that it wasn't supported, so I exchanged it with the Epson devices]. But that shouldn't discourage anyone here. I'm very glad that at least some people at HP work on drivers for their devices, but it's a bit of a shame that not all their devices are supported out of the box... CUPS and SANE provide so nice interfaces... So please please please, provide drivers "officially" for all your devices for Linux/FreeBSD/... [read: for CUPS and SANE] out of the box, on the driver CD and it should be visible on the device package. And I would very much like to see hplip work on FreeBSD! Hi ! I had a try of new PH 4219 Scan/Printer/Copier/Fax on Mandrake 10.1. I installed HPLIP 0.8.8, launched the service, then launched CUPS. I configured the Printer with KControl (choosed HP 4200 backend), and...it simply worked. I could easily print a test page or launch xsane for scanning. The only thing is the lower part of the frame of the CUPS test page is not printed (still this ennoying bug in Ghostscript ?). I have no idea how to acces the modem of this machine, but I am not sure it is possible with Windows. For your information, 421x series are naked, when 425x contain a phone. I found nothing about any GUI. I remember I tried to install one some time ago, but I don't exactly remember how. I think this printer should be added in Linuxprinting.org, at least as working mostly, and should be proposed in the list when configuring CUPS (it is a bit confusing choosing HP 4200 when you have a 4219). Many thanks Gerard |

Hi all I recently got a new HP 5510 All in one printer scanner. I run SUSE Linux 9.2 and a can print an scan o.k. with one exception. When I try to scan a single page via ADF using scanimage everything is fine (scanimage --format tiff --mode Lineart --resolution 300dpi > scan1.tiff) If I try to scan mulitple pages I get the correct number of images files - but all the images are empty (scanimage --format tiff --mode Lineart --resolution 300dpi --batch-scan=yes -b) I changed the orientation of the pages, upside down etc. but no difference. any help would be appriciated. regards stefan |

Sorry for OT but hp support cannot help me I've to write software (well windows) that can read the amount of ink Seems it's stored somewhere in the system not in the printer - what is the printer language - PCL ? - is there any SDK for hp printers - I didn't find anything - do you know where and how is stored, calculate the amount of ink ? - is it standard way for all hp printers or can vary between models ?
