This sounds more like a sane backend problem that an issue with the hpoj or hplip packages check /etc/sane.d/dll.conf on a line "hp" set in it. Depending on your distro this may be disabled by default. If that is the case, add the line or uncomment it and startup hpoj/hplip device and run the following command to see if it appears. scanimage -L -- Darragh "Nothing's foolproof to a sufficently talented fool" |

I have a HP PSC 2410 installed. Printing works great, using cups. But scanning doesn't work at all. The device is not being recognized by xsane. HP-device-manager does find the printer, hence I do have acces to hp-toolbox. For printing hpijs-driver is being used. Notes on www.linuxprinting.org are stating that scanning works great with HPOJ. But when I follow the link to http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/ it says that "For all USB and network connected HP devices use HPLIP instead of HPOJ". And "HPOJ should only be used for parallel cennected HP devices. HPOJ and HPLIP can co-exist on the same pc, but they cannot acces the same device". So I installed HPLIP. How can I get scanning to work? Peter. |

I have tested it now here at Mandriva. Install HPLIP from hpinkjet.sf.net and use the PPD for the HP PSC 1600 series. Then you get perfect results. Full-bleed unfortunately only works with 10x15/4x6 paper, but it works also on paper without tear-off tab. Hi, i am using hpoj 0.91 both on my laptop as well as on my desktop (both debian sid) with my officejet v40. It works very well, better than hplip, which has problems with scanning via the adf. Now I have compiled and installed the hpoj 0.91 on a linksys NSLU2 (arm, big endian architecture, kernel 2.6.12), which I'd like to work as a printer server. Compilation and installation works flawlessly. However, 'ptal-init setup' cannot find the printer. The syslog contains lots of errors such as: Aug 30 13:24:45 (none) lpr.notice ptal-mlcd: SYSLOG at /public/share/sources/hpo j-0.91/mlcd/ExMgr.h:646, dev=<mlc:usb:probe@/dev/usb/lp0>, pid=2312, e=25, t=112 5401085 ptal-mlcd successfully activated, mode=1284.4. Btw. the hardware and the connection to the officejet is fine as I can print via cups using a raw printer driver. Michael |

Greeting all. After getting a few (of my) problems sorted out, I have been using our 7310 quite happily printing from both Linux and Windows. The only thing I have not been able to get working is to have the printer print double sided, as it can from Windows. I'm sure it is probably something simple I've missed, but I can't find it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. - Mark |

Correct. hplip does not work with parallel connections. It could, but HP upstream won't write the code, and nobody seems to be willing to improve hpiod to do so. -- "One disk to rule them all, One disk to find them. That said if you download hpoj-0.91-5 from unstable that will actually allow you to have both hpoj and hplip loaded together. It should co-exist on a sarge box as well. My setup here I use hpoj by itself, I don't have hplip installed. hplip is actually maintained by another team, but they are supposed to co-exist, but hplip is in development. I would recommend that if hplip works by itself, then that is prefered for USB PSC's, if you have mixed usb and parallel then you should use both hplip (usb) and hpoj (parallel) and if you only have parallel then hpoj is prefered. That said hpoj will support both usb scanning/ printing as I am running here. So I would recommend you deinstall hplip and see if hpoj will pick it up by itself. Mark |

Hi Ron, I'm the Debian GNU/Linux maintainer for hpoj and I have a HP PSC 1215, which I think is very close to the 1210 as I am using the 1210 drivers! I can assure you that scanning and printing do work at the same time. The Debian packages have all the enhancements from the CVS version. Can you confirm which version of hpoj you have installed via debian? `dpkg -l hpoj` Also please confirm that hpoj isn't commented out of /etc/sane.d/dll.conf, that should be automatic, but you never know. > Scanning works using the HPOJ <http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/> low-level > driver together with its SANE <http://www.sane-project.org/> backend > "hpoj". Hello - I installed Debian Sarge on my laptop about three weeks ago, so I am still very new to all of this. I feel like I have learned a lot in a short time, but I can't seem to figure out how to install my HP PSC 1210 multifunction to print and scan. I have set up printing without too much difficulty, but scanning is turning out to be a bear. When I try to use XSane it freezes, and I am confident that the problem is that the scanner is not set up correctly. But how, I don't know. I found this little blurb on the linuxprinting.org website, but completely understanding it is another story: Does not understand PCL as most other DeskJets/PSCs/OfficeJets, it uses the so-called "Lightweight Imaging Device Interface Language" (LIDIL), these printers are supported by the "hpijs" driver beginning from version 1.3. The driver supports resolutions only up to 600 dpi, head alignment settings stored in the printer are not made use of, so use a one-cartridge (CMY) printing mode in case of mis-alignments. Scanning works using the HPOJ <http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/> low-level driver together with its SANE <http://www.sane-project.org/> backend "hpoj". However, note that when using the current version (0.9) you can only scan, and when you don't use HPOJ at all you can only print. To fix this so you can both print and scan, you MUST install libusb <http://libusb.sourceforge.net> and upgrade to the CVS version of HPOJ <http://hpoj.sourceforge.net>. So, if I got this right, I need to install libusb and upgrade to the CVS version of HPOJ. Can someone explain how I do this? My attempts to install libusb (the most recent release) get foiled at the build stage, and I can't find anything regarding a CVS version of HPOJ on the site. I am looking forward to hearing your words of advice. Thanks in advance. -Ron Crummett |

After I scan via xsane, the printer will no longer print. The docs stay in the print cue. The only cure is to delete the printer in Kprint and reinstall with a new name! I have tried restarting ptal-init, rerunning it, even (forgive the windows reference) rebooting to no avail. Any suggestions? Thank you. Harry G |

Hi, I'm looking at the problem of translating CUPS ptal: URIs into hp: URIs, so that upgrading Fedora Core from an hpoj-based set-up to an HPLIP-based one works. ptal:/mlc:usb:PSC_2200_Series | V hp:/usb/PSC_2200_Series?serial=MY2CVF42CR0G As far as I can tell, this can't be done without the actual device present and enabled, because ptal: URIs don't have as much information in as hp: URIs. Is my only hope to have the "update configuration" program run the CUPS 'hp' backend, looking for possible matches? Tim. */ |

Burps, make sure you also check /var/log/daemon.log to see what cups is doing at the same time. A couple of times I had similar issues as foomatic-bin wasn't installed. Hello I wated to setup an HP OfficeJet G55 on a debian sarge, so I followed EXACTLY what was written in the following HOWTO : http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/install.php The printer is discovered by my linux box : Jun 10 14:58:26 neo kernel: hub.c: new USB device 02:00.0-1, assigned address 2 Jun 10 14:58:26 neo kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x3f0/0x11) is not claimed by any active driver. Jun 10 14:58:31 neo kernel: usb.c: registered new driver usblp Jun 10 14:58:31 neo kernel: printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 0 proto 3 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x0011 Jun 10 14:58:31 neo kernel: printer.c: v0.13: USB Printer Device Class driver Jun 10 14:58:31 neo usb.agent[14201]: printer: loaded successfully I can then set it up under cups, as explained in the HOWTO. Then I try to print something, it says OK, but never prints anything. The weird thing is that when I go on the CUPS page, I can see the printer, and when I click on "print test page", I have the following error : "You don't have permission to access the resource on this server." --> OK, it doesn't really matter, just a CUPS misconfiguration... If I use kprinter, I can confirm CUPS is bad configured : ERROR : The IPP request failed for an unknown reason... So : which way do I have to test that the hplip installation worked !!! (just print a test page would make me SO happy...) Oh, and btw, if anyone has a solution for my CUPS problem.... Thx for all Bye |

For HP printers it is usually HPIJS for inkjets or PCL-5 devices, "pxlmono" for PCL-6 devices, "pnm2ppa" for the old PPA devices, and "Postscript" (with manufacturer-supplied PPD) for PostScript devices. HPLIP is independent of this. It works with most not to old HP printers, also PostScript or PCL-6 models which do not need HPIJS. HPLIP is a low-level driver framework which serves for accessing bi-di functions, as 4-edge full bleed, ink level and status check, nozzle cleaning, scanning, memory card reading. And this is completely independent of the conversion of incoming PostScript to the printer's language. Till |
