I'm having some trouble getting the card reader on the hp photosmart 2610 to work. I've followed the instructions and have the following in /etc/mtools.conf: mtools_skip_check=1 drive p: file=":0" remote I'm starting ptal-photod with: root:~# ptal-photod hpjd:192.168.2.205 -maxaltports 26 -bindtoall Then I try the following: root:~# mdir p: ptal-photod(hpjd:192.168.2.205): Error opening the peripheral's photo-card access channel! floppyd_io: Input/output error Printing and scanning works well. And I've disabled the the memory card security (so network access to the card is allowed). The photosmart can access the pictures without any problems. |

I haven't worked for HP, but I did have access to a similar service system. I was asked not to divulge it, and I don't plan to. When I viewed the settings that could be changed, I could see that although some options could be useful if they could be easily changed, some of them looked like they could really foul up the device, rendering it unusable, and necessitating a lengthy call to tech support, which probably would have to refer the problem to some higher tier. Obviously (to me) it could be a very expensive mistake for a technology company to give untrained users easy access to settings that are meant only for factory setup or by trained technicians in a repair facility. In many locations, there will be curious kids (and others) who want to know how everything works, and love to push buttons. I'm pretty sure that a great many printers would be repeatedly (sometimes deliberately) fouled up once this kind of info were made public. The cost of the resulting tech support calls and eventual lost sales would be passed on to customers. I don't think we want that. -- Joe Piolunek |

My Bad! The OfficeJet635 uses hpij, which does not seem to have *any* gui. At least, I can't find it anywhere after compiling and installing. It seems that having the printer plugged into my linux server with hpij provides little (or no benifit) to having it plugged into my Dlink router. Not knocking this project, I love your work and ay use it with a different printer in the future, but for me, the Dlink wins out for ease of use/configuration. Many thanks for your help anyway. I have a slightly different, but related, question to the one below. Is there any place where I can get documentation (or just information) on the breakout of the various parameters ("Set-Up", I believe it was called) on an HP OJ 7130 that are accessed via the front panel special keys in some combination (i.e. * and #, I forget the exact sequence)? I recently had to contact tech support to resolve an issue of erroneous pickup when the unit was set to auto-answer, and they stepped me through a sequence that allowed for setting a variety of numbered parameters that controlled, for example, fax eavesdropping. After setting them, I asked the rep where I could find such information, and of course the answer was "you can't have them - you could mess up your device with them." Whatever. Anyway, I would just like to have a reference guide of some sort - no different, IMO, than having a full listing of AT commands and parameters for a modem. Any pointers to such information, or an authoritative answer of "you can never know those", would be helpful. (I'd like the whole enchilada, not just those devoted to fax support. I'm just using the fax parameters as an example). thx! jbh > I know there is no send/recieve fax support, but I would like to know > if I can configure the number of rings and the ring type etc for the > fax component of the 635 (like there currently is the Windows util). |

Hi, I'm running debian unstable, and installed the 0.8.7 version of hplip. I had been using hpoj to print and scan with my officjet k80xi. I followed the hplip installation instructions, and "prepared the linux environment" and then used apt-get to install hplip. Installation went smoothly, and I used cups to configure the printer. (apt-get removed hpoj before installing hplip). But when I try to print, whether from it's a cups test page or a test page from hplip's toolbox, printing fails. Can't scan either. I've noticed at least one other post in the hplip forums from another officejet k80 user who appears to have the same problem. I'd be grateful for any advice. (I've had to go back to using hpoj for now. ) Tim |

Sorry to ask this again... Hi all, I have searched Google and the list for answers to my questions but can't seem to find them, sorry if these have already been asked and answered. I am wandering if the HPOJ software provides a GUI of some sort. I have the OfficeJet 635 at home, and at the moment it is running off a Dlink Router that has a parellel port so it is shared around the house. This only allows you to print, but I want to be able to configure the printer for recieving faxes (i.e the number of rings to wait etc) and thought maybe this project and my linux box will help me do this. I am also hoping that I would be able to see on the linux box the faxes I couldn't print (no paper, ink etc), but I think from the support matrix, this isn't supported. Can someone also confirm this. Simply restart cupsd manually. As far as I know this "unable to bind socket" problem has nothing to do with HPLIP. The HPLIP developer would know if their software may try to bind to port 631 but this would be so weird (why should their software try to bind to a port which is needed for a subsystem which is needed by their software) that I am sure it doesn't. I assume the "unable to bind socket" was caused by the SIGHUP because "lp" can indeed not bind to a port below 1024. It may also happen by accident because any other service may occupy port 631 (often only for a short time). Then it would have to be fixed in the other service. > Before installing hpoj cups was ok and everyone in the LAN was > using the printer. Scanning was needed. Hello, using HPLIP 0.8.7: I) It seems there are some ugly "compatibility" links needed: 1.) According to the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) "/usr is shareable, read-only data", see http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#THEUSRHIERARCHY Therefore links from config files like /etc/hp/hplip.conf -> /usr/share/hplip/hplip.conf are not allowed according to FHS because the admin should be able to change them without the need to re-mount /usr/ if he has mounted it read-only. At the moment I move the config file mv /usr/share/hplip/hplip.conf /etc/hp/hplip.conf but because HP's "make install" creates links, it seems that something in HP's software expects it in /usr/share/hplip/. Therefore to be safe I added a link /usr/share/hplip/hplip.conf -> /etc/hp/hplip.conf but I don't like such "compatibility" links because very soon some tools or documentation or users rely on such links and you will never ever get rid of them. I would prefer when the config file is only expected in /etc/hp/. 2.) The same problem exists for the init script. HP's "make install" creates a link /etc/init.d/hplip -> /usr/share/hplip/hplip.sh which is not wrong according to FHS because the init script is not supposed to be changed by the admin. Nevertheless it looks not nice and again I move it mv /usr/share/hplip/hplip.sh /etc/init.d/hplip and to be safe I must add a "compatibility" link /usr/share/hplip/hplip.sh -> /etc/init.d/hplip I would prefer to have it only under /etc/init.d/. 3.) The same problem exists for the "toolbox" script. HP's "make install" installs it under /usr/share/hplip/toolbox but /usr/share/hplip/ is not in a normal usre's PATH. Therefore I create a third "compatibility" link /usr/bin/toolbox -> /usr/share/hplip/toolbox Why is the "toolbox" script not installed into /usr/bin/? II) SIGHUP kills cupsd if it doesn't run as root. In /etc/init.d/hplip there is "killall -HUP cupsd". If cupsd doesn't run as root, the SIGHUP will terminate it, see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/09/jsmeix_print-einrichten-90.html Therefore I exchange it with "sed -i -e" as follows: 's/killall -HUP cupsd/echo "Note: You may have to restart the cupsd."/' I have a bad feeling when an init script automatically triggers other services to be reloaded or even re-started. I think a message to the admin is sufficient and safe. Hello, On Jan 29 22:04 Jarl Friis wrote (shortened): > Will you make sure that hplip will be included and integrated into the > next SuSE Linux release. Eventually leaving the hpoj package out of > the distribution. We are working to include HPLIP in the next SUSE LINUX version. If no unexpected serious problems occur it should be included. Additionally we try to keep HPOJ (package hp-officeJet) to be on the safe side if HPLIP fails for some particular models (e.g. at the moment parallel-port scanners are not supported by HPLIP). Note: At the moment nothing is "sure" or guaranteed. You will have to wait until the next SUSE LINUX version is available. Then look for matching support database articles like http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/08/jsmeix_print-einrichten-92.html http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/10/jsmeix_scanner-setup-92.html and read the news regarding printer and scanner setup for the next SUSE LINUX version. Question: Will HPLIP be also available for SUSE LINUX 9.2/9.1? Answer: No. Reason: This would require changings of - Ghostscript (because of the /usr/bin/hpijs conflict) - YaST2 printer config (to support the 'hp' CUPS backend) - YaST2 scanner config (to support the 'hpaio' SANE backend) - YaST2 printer & scanner config (to set up the hplip deamons) to have HPLIP well integrated. I.e. a plain hplip package would be only useful for users who have solid Linux knowledge and can set up their hardware manually but such users can also compile and install it from the sources: Note that - since SUSE LINUX 9.2 the stuff in the PyQt and PyQt-devel packages has been moved into the kdebindings3-python package, - there are several "hidden" requirements to compile and run it for which there is no error or warning shown by HP's configure script so that it is recommended to start with a default set of installed packages (e.g. standard installation with KDE), - HP's init script for the hplip services may kill the cupsd because it runs as user 'lp' where SIGHUP stops it, see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/09/jsmeix_print-einrichten-90.html Kind Regards, Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5 Mail: js...@su... 90409 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/ |

Dear Klaas. Will you make sure that hplip will be included and integrated into the next SuSE Linux release. Eventually leaving the hpoj package out of the distribution. A response would be appreciated. Jarl |

Yes this device is supported. Please use the hplip driver found at http://hpinkjet.sf.net Cory hplip team On Wed, 2005-01-26 at 10:25 -0800, Mark Knecht wrote: > Hi, > I wanted to pick up a psc 1350 today as a second printer but mostly > because we really need a scanner. Hi, I wanted to pick up a psc 1350 today as a second printer but mostly because we really need a scanner. I wanted to check that scanning is well supported under Linux with this printer. Also I'm not at all clear whether this is a separate driver only and I still use Sane as the front-end app for scanning. Can someone with knowledge about these printers please confirm or deny? Thanks in advance, Mark |

If both devices are USB try uninstalling hpoj and installing hplip from http://hpinkjet.sf.net Cory On Tue, 2005-01-25 at 15:54 +0100, Eckart Schmidtke wrote: > hello, > > i'm working with suse 9.2, hpoj 0.91-123.2, sane 1.0.14-5. > > i can't find a way for correctly installing my two hp-devices, > psc1210 and officejetk80. > > there ist no problem, if i install only one device. printing and > scanning with ptal works absolutly correct. > > the problem starts, if i try to install both devices. the ptal-entry > for the psc1210 is lost. i can only see mlc:usb:k80, eben then, > when i first install psc1210 and follow with k80. in the last case > using psc1210 is furthernow not possible - no printing, no > scanning. > > is there any way to fix the problem ? > > thanks for help > eckart > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IntelliVIEW -- Interactive Reporting > Tool for open source databases. I'm running debian unstable and installed (via apt-get) hplip version .08.7-2 and hpijs version 2.0.1+0.8.7-2. My HP OfficeJet k80xi is connected via a usb port. Under hpoj printing and scanning worked, but when I installed hplip (apt removed hpoj during installation) and followed the hplip setup instructions, I couldn't print. The HP device manager lists the printer with the "hp:/usb/hp etc." id. It's listed correctly in cups and the kde print manager as well, but test pages fail to print. Scanning doesn't work either, and the scanning option is greyed out in the hp device manager. (Printing isn't greyed out, but it still doesn't work.) For now I've removed hplip and gone back to hpoj, but I'd be grateful for any suggestions about how to get hplip to work. Thanks, Tim |

If you have a firewall running you can temporarily stop it to probe for network printers...
