As printing maintainer of the Mandrakelinux distribution I also wish that HPLIP replaces HPOJ COMPLETELY, so that I can take HPOJ from the distro as soon as possible. I want to avoid having unmaintained software in the distro and there should also not be two packages fulfilling the same purpose. Also printerdrake gets big an cluttered if it has to take into account so many different methods of printer setup. I also want to let HP's print-only devices print through HPLIP, so that one can use the inkjet maintenance functions of the toolbox. Nozzle cleaning and ink level checking would get very expensive if one has to by an HP JetDirect box for ones parallel printers. We cannot declare the parallel port as obsolete. Many of our customers still have parallel-port HP inkjet or multi-function printers. Till |

On the hpinkjet "supported devices" page, several multifunction devices have "Yes" in the "Parallel" column, but according to the installation notes, HPLIP doesn't support parallel-connected devices ("Note: The HP printing software supports only USB and network connections. Parallel connections are not supported."). If hplip won't support parallel connections, hpoj will still be needed for all-in-ones that have only a parallel connection. I don't know how many of them are still in use, but my parallel-only OfficeJet 600 just recently died after eight years in what I think is a normal home desktop situation. It would be nice if hplip could support parallel devices. That it does not (yet?) creates extra work (stop hpoj, start hplip, etc.) for users who have a parallel-only all-in-one connected to their desktop pc (using hpoj), but also want to print/scan to a networked device (using hplip). -- Joe Piolunek |

So, the answer is kind of mixed depending on how you look at the question. Inherently, no there aren't any missing support for the USB MFP devices in the driver. However, in the models.xml file there were some missing entries, which I have readded. There will be another release soon with the missing entries added. The DeskJet 710C is NOT supported by HPOJ. The printer is accessed through the usual /dev/lp0 and the driver ist pnm2ppa, if not available in your distro get it from http://pnm2ppa.sf.net/. Install Debian's foomatic-filters package (to have foomatic-rip) and get the PPD from http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet_710C Then proceed as shown on http://www.linuxprinting.org/cups-doc.html to set up your print queue. Hi guys, I am trying to get my HP Deskjet 710C working with my Debian testing computer. And I am struggling. I managed to get the computer set up in CUPS via the http admin, but it does not want to print a test page and I can't get anything to the printer. Here's the error message I received when I tried to use HPOJ: QUOTE Probe for parallel-connected devices ([y]/n)? y Successfully loaded kernel module "lp" for the device probe. Warning: Probing incorrect I/O port addresses could result in system instability and/or data loss! I have already made first Mandrakelinux RPMs of HPLIP. You find them on http://www.linuxprinting.org/till/tmp/ Version is 0.8.4. Note that there are three binary RPMs, one main package, one with HPIJS 2.0 and one with the PPDs for HPIJS 2.0. foomatic-rip is not included, it is already installed with the foomatic-filters package. To try HPLIP, install at first only the main package. The toolbox should work then on 10.1. On Cooker it really does not work. Cory, are you already testing with Cooker? Your PDF issues are probably a GhostScript problem. Try installing GPL GhostScript 8.15 from source. It should fix all PDF issues. To print PDFs then do not send them directly to CUPS (as CUPS uses XPDF to convert PDF to PostScript). Open the PDFs with gv and use the print function of gv to get them printed. Hi, all HP users ! I have some trouble with a HP PSC 2410. I use Mandrake 10.1 + KDE 3.3 + OOo 1.1.3 + CUPS. I used latest versions of HPOJ, then I tried HPLIP. When I try to print a page like this one in landscape mode, I always miss a few mm on the left side (using A4 format) : http://www.gardemedicaledeparis.org/gardes/gardes.php?jour=2005-01-01 When I want to print it in portrait mode, it is OK. When I use KDE's virtual PDF printer, it is OK. But if I want to print my PDF, it is bad again. The same problem occurs with OOo (but the print preview is OK). The Mandrake CUPS test page looks correct : there is a big frame next to the edges of the sheet, but le lower side of the frame is a bit far from the bottom edge (a few cm). I tried to lower the margins, but the only result is the text looks bigger. And still the same problem : the latest part of the text to get out of the printer is missing. Looks like the systems has a bad knowledge of the actual size of the sheets. Any idea about the reasons and the solution of the problem ? Other problem (not important for the moment) : the new graphical frontend to the printer crashes when launching, in spite of compiling nicely. The error message says there is a problem with QT. Many thanks Gerard |

Hi, This may be a non-issue, but still I want to mention it. Looking at the diffs between PSC 1300 and PSC 1310 I see that the 1310 has a reference to PSC 1200 series. ... 32c32 < *Product: "(psc 1300 series)" --- > *Product: "(psc 1200 series)" ... 57c57 < MDL:psc 1300 series; --- > MDL:psc 1200 series; Furthermore I noticed that the linuxprinting page about PSC1310 suggests that hpijs 1.3 or higher is enough to get it going. That is not correct. On SUSE9.1 the hpijs is 1.4.1 (part of ghostscript-library package), and that one does not have support for deskjet 3600 (as required by the 1310 ppd). FWIW. I've created a modified ghostscript-library RPM which includes hpijs 1.7.1, and also a hplip 0.8.4 rpm without /usr/bin/hpijs. The latter was needed because of a rpm conflict between these two. It made me realize that the SUSE packaging (at least until 9.1) comes with a pretty complex maintenance as far as the hpijs is concerned. With the introduction of hplip there are now at least three packages involved. * cups-drivers (includes the PPDs from linuxprinting.org) * ghostscript-library (includes the hpijs binary and the readme.html) * hplip (source includes the latest version of hpijs, and PPDs) How can this be maintained properly? I wish SUSE a lot of wisdom :-) Kind regards, Kees Bakker PS. What is considered the actual SOURCE of the PPDs from HP? Is the hplip tar file taking the lead these days? Or is it linuxprinting.org somewhere? |

Hi, I have a HPLJ3330 with a Netcomm USB Print Server (NP3645). The network print server allows my network hosts to access the printer via the ethernet. It supports TCP/IP, SMB, IPP amongst other things. I have managed to get both MSW and Linux clients (via CUPS) to print :) Does anyone know how I can share the scanner with this printserver. It would be good if I can share between Linux and MSW hosts. I did have hpoj working at one stage, but that was when the printer was directly connected to a linux server. This option is no longer available. I want to share everything via the Netcomm print-server if possible. Any help or pointers muchly appreciated. Ta, Brendan Simon. |

I am running SuSE 9.2 Pro and have the HP Officejet rpm installed. I can't get it configured. It works on (ugh) Windows but even Windows won't give me the actual USB serial device it is using. usbview gives me a message that states Error /proc/bus/usb/devices does not exist. The ptal-init setup command fails as listed below. My question is "How can I get it installed?" Cory, David, are there still HP MF devices not supported by HPLIP yet? Is HPOJ still needed in the distros? For HPIJS, it shows "no" for USB/Network, and "no" for Service and Fax. By mistake, I first tried to use HPLIP for this printer, which didn't work at all. Now I use the old-style HPOJ solution with USB connection and manual installation of the ptal driver ("ptal init setup"). This works for printing and scanning but there are no service functions, except the small LCD display applet. Can someone clear that up: http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/hplip_readme.html states that HPLIP shall be a successor/replacement for the HPOJ package. But, if so, why doesn't it support printing through the USB connection for the K Series? Maybe this type of printer and the USB connection will be supported in later versions of HPLIP? HPLIP contains HPIJS, so the print filter is still HPIJS. But the texts still talking about HPOJ should really be updated. The new functions of HPLIP you find when starting the "toolbox" (depending on model and mechanism): - Status reporting of all jobs the machine does - Ink level display - Nozzle checking - Nozzle cleaning - Head alignment - Color adjustment - Test page - Access GUIs for printing, scanning, and memory card reading by clicking a button In addition, no "ptal-init setup" is needed any more. Configuration goes automatically. Simply have HPLIP running and restart CUPS after plugging a device. Then you will get an "hp:/..." URI for the device in the output of "lpinfo -v". Then set up a CUPS queue with this URI and the appropriate PPD file (which is supplied with HPLIP). After that the device is fully functional. Till Rainer Dorsch wrote: > Thanks for the link.
