Hi. I have an OJ 7130, hpoj-0.91, kernel 2.6.6, and am using a 256 MB SD card. The card has an I/O error on it, most likely a FAT error of some sort. I have subjected the card to a piece of commercial recovery software that has verified that it can read the 120 or so images that are on the card (does this by displaying them; just no way to then save them until one pays for the non-demo version). When doing its scan, the recovery software at first reports that it has encountered an error, and gives the choice to retry, ignore, or abort. When I choose "ignore", it then goes on to do a successful scan of all images on the card. This behavior is not unlike what happens when one has a FAT error on any other media, such as a floppy or even hard drive. This is all done using the camera as the reader for the media, and using the USB interface between the camera and the system. So at this point, I could pay for the software, but would really rather not. Since I have the 7130 with a reader, I would like to use that, and see if there is a way I can simply get at the various jpeg and avi files on the card. The problem I am having is that as soon as I insert the card, the LED on the reader on the OJ flashes orange and the LCD says "Error found on card" and won't do any more with the card to make it accessible through hpoj. My basic question is, is there any way to cause the OJ/reader/embedded software/firmware to effectively "ignore" the error condition and proceed with a normal setup of the media so that it is then available via either mtools or USB storage? If no way to force an "ignore", is there a way to turn off error checking, or in some way place the device in a "dumb" mode so that it is essentially just a reader device, and relies on the OS to any checking? Also, at present I am running the 7130 via parallel port interface (LIO card on JetDirect port). This shouldn't have any net effect on this particular issue. However, if any part of my future success relies on the ability to use only USB storage and not the mtools method of interface via photod, please let me know, as I'll have to start rewiring things. But at present, this appears to be a non-issue, since this particular problem is entirely on-board to the OJ and has nothing to do with the media reading being stopped by an error condition. Thx for any help you can provide! jbh |

Hmm . . . this setup should work. Did the ./configure find your libusb headers when you compiled? If not, make sure that you have libusb-headers installed (not sure if Debian has a libusb-devel package or not). -- mikeh |

Hi, I am running Debian Linux, 2.4.18-bf2.4 i686, I have compiled and installed the HPOJ 0.91 release, with an HP PSC 1210 All In One. I have not installed CUPS on the machine. The ptal-init setup works fine. When I try ptal-connect mlc:usb:psc_1200_series, I get the following errors: ptal-mlcd: ERROR at transport/ExMlcCommandChannel.cpp:251, dev=<mlc:usb:psc_1200_series@/dev/usb/lp0), pid=307, e=22, t=1085652242 Command reply timeout on port=1, count=1, lastgRequest=0x00! ptal-mlcd:Error at ExMgr.cpp:871, dev=<mlc:usb:psc_1200_series@/dev/usb/lp0>, pid=307, e=22, t=1085652242 exClose(reason=0x3002) libusbFindDevice: Couldn't find device! No real solution as there is non more problem! In fact the only thing to do was printing a page using cups and parport directly without the use of the ptal device. Afterwhile the run of ptal-init went very well with the detection of my OfficeJet and the creation of the mlc/par device. Scanning is fine too. So the different steps are: installation of Mdk10.0 installation of hpoj printing page using cups and the printer detected on parport directly ptal-init setup Hope that will help someone in the need. I've been trying off and on to get hpoj to compile with libusb version 0.1.8 for a while with no success until today. It was always giving me errors when trying to link ExMgr.cpp. Libusb version 0.1.7 would work without problem, but 0.1.8 didn't. I figure out it's because the install of libusb doesn't put the .so extension on the shared objects it installs! I sent them a bug report [0] to notify them of this.=20 This was a big problem for me, since the linux kernel removed the scanner module, causing sane to need libusb, but it seemed to need version 0.1.8 of the library. Oddly enough, sane-backends compiled fine with the .so extension missing...=20 Anyways, hopefuly someone else will find this helpful. I seem to recall a few other messages on this list about libusb problems. [0] http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=3Ddetail&aid=3D960978&group_i= d=3D1674&atid=3D101674 |

Hi Dan, Well the gimp-print and the hpijs drivers are two different animals. The best way that I would suggest to print from Gimp is this... Create a new queue in CUPS with all your settings that you want. Then in the command bar put in lpr -P <queuename> and print that way... When creating the printer port make sure you are not using just an USB port but a ptal managed USB port. For example mlc:usb://device... You can do this by running #ptal-init setup. Restart CUPS, then use the web interface http://localhost:631 to configure the printer. Be sure to choose the right port. Hi, I'm new in Linux - just a month or so of experience. I've just ended installing the hpoj software, and I want to share with you some problems I've found during the installation and how I've overcome them. First of all, I use SUSE Linux 9.0 with the following kernel: Linux linux 2.4.21-215-default #1 Tue Apr 27 01:00:43 UTC 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux My printer is a HP PSC 1110 all-in-one. I downloaded the package to compile it from source, since the ones available for Suse 9.0 were not compiled for libusb support. I succeeded in compiling - the standard compilation - the hpoj software but I found the following bug: at the end of the proccess - don't remember now whether it was in the 'make install' or before, the compilation succeeded in creating the appropiate scripts for 'ptal-init' in all runlevels except in runlevel2 (/etc/init.d/rc2.d). I did this manually following the instructions you provide in the documentation pages. Since the compilation had created init scripts with the form 'S01ptal-init' in the other runlevels (3 and 5), I assigned the same S and K numbers to the scripts that I created in runlevel2 (S01ptal-init). Then I rebooted the system, and checked whether HP-OfficeJet got started before CUPS. With this, there was no problem. But at the end of the proccess, ptal-mlcd produced the following error: May 24 20:57:18 linux ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:4063, dev=3D<mlc:usb:psc_1100_series@/dev/usb/lp0>, pid=3D743, e=3D20, t=3D1085425038 libusbFindDevice: Couldn't find device! As expected, when I try to communicate with the printer, using the 'ptal-print </dev/null' command, the program gave back "failed" message. But, the somehow stunning thing was that if I 'ptal-init setup' again, the comunication with the printer was made, and I could use all the printer facilities. After some thinking and trying various changes that didn't do anything I found out what was the problem: compilation had charged the scripts files too early, so the libusb modules weren't still charged. I corrected this for all the runlevels (2,3 and 5) and restarted the system. And everything is working!!! The rest of the process was very easy: I used cups to setup the print queue, and followed your instructions for sane. No problems there. I've post you this message because I don't know why the compilation process assigned a '01' start script to ptal-init. (S01ptal-init). I use the standard compilation, that is, no special characteristics. If this is done automatically, I understand that is done this way intentionally to get 'ptal-init' started before CUPS. But, it would be useful to correct this numbers, so that 'ptal-init' started just before CUPS. I hope this would be useful to other users. Thanks a lot. Jos=E9 Juan Gonz=E1lez jj...@ya... After a crash disk I have decided to reinstall and upgrade from Mandrake 9.2 to Mandrake 10.0. My OJ710 was working perfectly (printing and scanning) under 9.2 but... under 10.0 nothing goes right! ptal-init setup finds the OfficetJet on parport but failed to communicate with it. ptal-init setup cannot find the OfficeJet if I don't cycle poweroff poweron after each try. I don't put all the logs in this message, but if someone as a clue I would send him directly the logs and after I succeed (hope...) I will resend a message with the problem and the solution so that everyone would be able to read what happened and how to proceed. Many thanks. Bertrand |

Hi, In an attempt to get both scanning and printing working on an HP PSC 1210, I am trying to follow the instructions here (http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1210 that indicate I need to download the latest source from CVS. Is there a way that I can build an RPM from this source that can be distributed to fedora core 1 linux installations that do not have the full development environment installed? My current understanding is that the make install option is the only way to install from this source. Thanks, Ryan __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm running Arch Linux, stock 2.6.6 kernel, and I'm unable to build the hpoj-0.91 without disabling libusb. .90 builds fine, but my PSC 1210 printer doesn't run under .90. :( It's obviously a libusb problem, although as far as I can tell, it has been part of the kernel for a while now. I recall reading somewhere that a couple of device names have changed when moving to kernel 2.6, so that could be a possibility. Anyway, I posted my error messages. I hope someone can help. :-/ Thanks. Have you installed the latest hpoj driver? I think its 0.91. I know I had a problem like you describe with an HP Officejet G55 and installing this driver fixed it. I use SuSE 9.0. Has anyone been able to print using the OfficeJet 5510? I went through the steps to get the printer working on Mandrake/CUPs, and I can now scan using the device but any time I try and send a test page nothing happens (no errors and no response from the printer) Here is the output of some of the ptal utils: # ptal-hp mlc:usb:officejet_5500_series device Model name: officejet 5500 series Model number: Q3435A Serial number: MY438F211D96 Firmware version: R0036xxNx Firmware datecode: (unavailable) # ptal-devid MFG:hp;MDL:officejet 5500 series;CMD:LDL,MLC,PML,DYN;CLS:PRINTER;1284.4DL:4d,4e,1;SN:MY438F211D96;S:0380008000020020002c148005ac2500060;Z:007; # ptal-print mlc:usb:officejet_5500_series < /dev/null ptal-print: connecting to device "mlc:usb:officejet_5500_series"... successful. # ptal-connect mlc:usb:officejet_5500_series -service ECHO (works as expected) - Setting the clock using ptal-hp works. - Viewing the display using ptal-hp does not work. - I can scan. I can't print. I have been able to print using a coupl other printers through my CUPS install so I know that should work. any ideas? Thanks, Enrico |

Hello, I'm using RH9 with CUPS and HP LJ 1100 + scanner. For several weeks I had succesfully used hpoj (ver 0.91) for my printing/scanning device. However at the moment it doesn't work. When I try to print I got the following messages (also in /var/log/messages): ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:3165, dev=<mlc:par:lj1100@/dev/lp0>, pid=9189, e=11, t=1084458371 llioSubprocess: llioWrite returns 1, expected=6! ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:2820, dev=<mlc:par:lj1100@/dev/lp0>, pid=8746, e=11, t=1084458371 llioService: fdRead returns 0, expected=6! ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:871, dev=<mlc:par:lj1100@/dev/lp0>, pid=8746, e=11, t=1084458371 exClose(reason=0x0010) If you can tell me where may I try to look I'd be very gratefull - I NEED THAT SCANNER VERY MUCH! :) Best regards sylwester |

Have you tried the release version of hpoj instead of the version from CVS? Did you try scanning? Since I can't remember if Debian installs the headers or not, make sure you install the libusb-devel package if one exists. If nothing else, make sure you have a /usr/include/usb.h file. Did you install the PPD from http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1100 ? Note that the above link talks about getting the CVS version because of a bug in hpoj 0.9. That bug was fixed in 0.91 which is the current release version I have a 1210, which is a similar printer, and it works fine. -- mikeh |
