I finally got my HP OfficeJet G55 working by installing the latest HPOJ V.91. I am on Suse Linux 9.0. Had alot of help in another news group. One thing they told me was to make sure that Ptal starts up before CUPS. The seq on my system is the HP Driver starts, then the usb and finally CUPS. Don't no if this will help. I also completely deinstalled the HP Printer before installing HPOJ. Don't know if this will give you any new info. I'm very new to Linux and fought my printer problem for several weeks. I did install the newer version over the old one. "Martin Schaller" <ma...@m-...> wrote in message news:c5duvj$63o$1...@se...... > I'm running Redhat 9 and hpoj 0.91. Hello, I recently purchased a OfficeJet V40 (USB). The device is correctly listed in /proc/bus/usb/devices, but when I run "ptal-init setup", it finds no device. The probe for /dev/usb/lp0 takes about 15 seconds; the ones after that takes less than one second each. None of the probes is successful. The computer that the OfficeJet is connected to is running Debian Woody and the 2.6.5 kernel. The version of HPOJ is 0.8-11. Here are the first few lines from syslog after invoking ptal-init: Apr 30 18:24:24 playa ptal-mlcd: SYSLOG at ExMgr.cpp:660, dev=<usb:probe>, pid=27048, errno=111 ptal-mlcd successfully initialized. I have had much trouble with using faxes on Linux. I finally had some good results with efax + xsane + kfax xsane seems to be the only scanning interface which can easily scan + send = fax=20 (even multipages faxes). Kooka is completely broken for this purpose and=20 xscanimage has no fax capabilities. OpenOffice.org does not work for scanni= ng=20 in writer at this moment. Hope it will be fixed some day ! efax is much more simple than hylafax, which asks you numerous silly questi= ons=20 for configuring. I'd like kooka could be improved some day, but no sign of activity now. Gerard |

hello, About two weeks ago I wrote to this mailing list about problems I had with my PSC 2210 when scanning while hpoj 0.90 was used. The problems included the whole scan area always being Letter sized (while the scanner is also supposed to be able to scan an A4 page) and the area actually being scanned being not exactly the same as the area selected for scanning in the scan preview window. I was suggested to upgrade hpoj to 0.91, but was unable to check if it solved these problems until now. So now I installed and compiled hpoj 0.91 and indeed the scanning area is now A4. Just out of curiousity, what would I need to do to set the scan area back to Letter size if I ever needed to ? (I hope it's possible without having to modify the sources and recompile) It also seems that problems with the area actually scanned being different than the area selected in the scan preview are mostly fixed. At this moment the actual scan area seems to be shifted about 0.5 cm down relative to what was selected in the scan preview (at least with kooka), but this is already much better than what I had with hpoj 0.90. Thank you for all your help. Michal Kosmulski |

Hi, as far as I can see, development of hpof has stalled with PC fax capabilities for most devices being unimplemented (i.e. "PC fax send: not yet" and "PC fax receive: no or not yet"). Now what would you suggest me: I'd love to have a fax device which is able to operate standalone (sending faxes without the computer, and receiving faxes for immediate printout). That's what an OfficeJet is supposed to do, right? But additionally, I'd like to be able to *send* faxes from a Linux workstation (the one the OfficeJet would be connected to), and, perhaps even more important: I'd like to be able to *receive* faxes on the Linux workstation. Whereas receiving faxes on the Linux system would mean that the OfficeJet should receive and store the faxes (even without the Linux system running), and that I should be able to retrieve the faxes from the OfficeJet. That's what *I* would expect an all-in-one device being able to do ;-) But, as far as I can see, there's no single all-in-one device on the market (HP, Epson, Canon whoever) that works as standalone fax machine, as fax memory and as fax modem--not in Windows and even more not in Linux. So do you have any suggestions for me? Should I buy both an all-in-one device *and* a fax modem with memory, should I save the money for the all-in-one, and better just buy a fax modem and a cheap scanner and (photo;-) printer? Or is there any better solution? How much work would it be to fill in the fax gaps from the hpoj TODO list? Would it pay off? If I should go with the fax modem, what kind of fax modem with standalone memory could you suggest me? (The cheaper the better ;-) Oh yes, I will only rarely use the fax functions at all. Thanks, Gregor |

It might have been that problem - I didn't get a chance to check because I resolved the problem before I read this. I simply upgraded my kernel to 2.6.5 and now printing works. Probably still needed that "hpoj-0.91-kernel26.patch" that I applied to hpoj-0.91. So basically 2.6.3 & 2.6.4 spit out blank pages (because of usblp.c?). I won't be staying subscribed to this mailing list so could those who are please pass on this kernel versioning advice to others who come across this blank-pages problem... or maybe it could be posted on the hpoj website? Thanks! -Joz On Tuesday April 27 2004 11:23 pm, you wrote: > Hello, > > check the usblp.c, to see if it has the bug described below... > > Printing started to work with Mandrake 10 2.6.3-4mdk kernel after applying > following usblp.c patch from > http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0403.0/1190.html > > === > --- drivers/usb/class/usblp.c.orig 2004-03-05 17:09:00.412189056 +0000 > +++ drivers/usb/class/usblp.c 2004-03-05 17:10:30.121551160 +0000 > @@ -609,8 +609,10 @@ static ssize_t usblp_write(struct file * > while (writecount < count) { > if (!usblp->wcomplete) { > barrier(); > - if (file->f_flags & O_NONBLOCK) > + if (file->f_flags & O_NONBLOCK) { > + writecount += transfer_length; > return writecount ? writecount : -EAGAIN; > + } > > timeout = USBLP_WRITE_TIMEOUT; > add_wait_queue(&usblp->wait, &wait); > @@ -670,7 +672,8 @@ static ssize_t usblp_write(struct file * > > usblp->writeurb->transfer_buffer_length = transfer_length; > > - if (copy_from_user(usblp->writeurb->transfer_buffer, buffer + > writecount, transfer_length)) { > + if (copy_from_user(usblp->writeurb->transfer_buffer, > + buffer + writecount, transfer_length)) { > up(&usblp->sem); > return writecount ? writecount : -EFAULT; > } > ==== |

Hello, I am truly sorry to raise this problem again. Unfortunately I am still not able to use my G55 on a USB port, even after having tried some of the solutions discussed in previous posts. I have installed on my Mandrake system: - kernel 2.6.5 (custom compiled because of the dpt_i2o module which is still missing in Mandrake 10.0 distribution) - hpoj-0.91-4mdk (0.91-4mdk has the patch for 2.6.x installed) - libhpojip0-0.91-4.mdk - libhpojip0-devel-0.91-4.mdk - libsane-hpoj1-0.91-4.mdk - libusb0.1_4-0.1.7-1mdk - libusb0.1_4-devel-0.1.7-1mdk I also added a symlink as suggested in a previous post on the subject, so I have: /dev/ptal-mlcd -> /var/run/ptal-mlcd/ /dev/ptal-printd -> /var/run/ptal-printd/ While the G55 is nicely seen by the usb utilities, ptal-init finds it but it goes in time out.. and so it does not allow to configure the G55. The only errors I found in syslog are given by devfsd (I have devfsd-1.3.25-37mdk). I acclude some logs below. I am just a typical user with no more clues about, so is there any suggestion for further action/patches/tricks ??? I read that LinuxPrinting.org webpage a long long time ago and followed the directions there (this is the second time I'm setting this printer up - on a new machine now), and I just read that page again over the past couple days trying to solve my problem. Unfortunately neither it, or a google search for "hpoj PSC 1210", nor the hpoj documentation comes up with any information pertaining to my problem - printing empty pages. I am asking specifically about this issue and the kernel patch I've read about to resolve it - I've done many google searches for that and not come up with many links to patches, only talk of them existing This mailing list does not have a search feature that I can find unfortunately. -Joz On Tuesday April 27 2004 03:14 pm, James B. Hello, I have a HP PSC 1210 model and am having a printing problem. The configuration, communication, and scanning seems to work well. When I go to print a test page through CUPS or try to print anything the printer just feeds paper in and then immediately spits it out blank. The printer keeps doing this until the paper tray is empty and never actually prints anything. I heard this was a linux kernel 2.6 issue and have read somewhere of a patch? I have kernel 2.6.4 and am having trouble finding this patch (shouldn't it be posted on the hpoj web page? Can't find it!) I'm also confused as to whether this is a kernel patch or a hpoj patch? I did manage to find a hpoj patch called "hpoj-0.91-kernel26.patch" - I applied it to hpoj-0.91 but it didn't fix the problem. I found this patch here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42921 Is there a kernel patch? How does one go about fixing this? I also tried using hpoj-CVS but that didn't help either. Downgrading this kernel is not an option (at least not down to 2.4). Can anybody help me out or point me in the right direction? My specifications: Slackware Linux 9.1 Kernel 2.6.4 HPOJ 0.91 hpijs 1.4.1 CUPS 1.1.19 |

Hi, Yes this printer is supported by hpoj. hpoj manages the connection to the printer so that it can take advantage of the other devices like the scanner. Therefore, when creating a print queue, you must use the ptal port instead of the network or USB. Hello, I'm just a newbie of these MFPs, so I'd like to know that is the HP 3030 is supported by the hpoj package, because I didn't found it on the list of supported devices. I asked the HP so they told me that HP 3030 has TWAIN 1.9 while 3200 has 1.7 and 3300 has 1.9 what are supported now. Of course, this related to the scanning, IMHO the postscript cannot change. :) Am I right? Can I use 3030 with my linux box? Fair enough answer I suppose, and I am certainly grateful that HP has put any resources into this at all given the non-M$ OS market penetration. Sorry that I have not responded to this sooner. We have heard your requests but were unable to respond until now. There is another solution currently under development that will replace the current hpoj implementation. However, until that time, hpoj should suffice for the majority of users, as it does support most AiO devices and will support the products coming out this Summer and Fall. There will be drawer statement here soon that will clearly state HP's intentions and commitment to the Linux community. And you addressed the ... part, but not this part. Later, in a different thread, you made mention that the next hpoj version would be desktop-neutral, which circumspectly addresses the question(s) above. There have been recurring questions along this line over the last few months. Are you able to discourse a little on the topic of hpoj's future and HP's level of continued interest? If you could, believe this would serve a couple purposes: (a) Keep the interest of those who may be interested in contributing. (b) Keep the faith of those who may be running across hpoj for the first time via the list, and be considering getting/using an HP device with linux, but likewise be concerned by seeing such questions being asked and not necessarily answered. Also, if you could, possibly address the other question about "no new news", which is another indicator people look at when deciding on hardware and software solutions. Thx, jbh |
