Dear Sirs, I have a HP G85 and SUSE Linux 9.1 running. I tried to install the printer by USB as well as paralell but I did not succeed. Yast find the printer and install it without any error message. But if I start printing the document stays in the cue of KPrinter without printing and a time out message after a long time. If I try installing the printer manual with yast and choose "All in on" then yast does not find the printer. I also found a more recent hpoj driver and installed it manually. There was no error message as well, but still the printer does not wiork. Same with the scanner. I am not firm by installing a printer using CUPS. Any idea? Any help? Thank you Best regards Christoph |

Hello, This is frustrating! I am using Mandrake 9.2 with HPOJ v0.90 and CUPS v1.1.9, these were installed from the stock Mandrake distro. I installed the system with the HPOJ 4110 connected, via usb cable, and was very pleased to find that Mandrake found the HPOJ. All functions appeared to work correctly: scanning and printing. After a few days of configuring the system, I deployed it to the customer location. This is when the problem showed up, in actual use the printer will print for a while and then myteriously die! 'lpq' reports that 'Printer is not ready'. Ok, a little research into the HPOJ docs and it says that the ptal-printd should not be used with cups and to disable it in /etc/ptal/mlc:usb:officejet_4100_series by setting init.printd.start=0. This seemed to have worked, for a few more days before it died again. I am at a loss, the only way it seems to get this printer to work is to run the Mandrake "Configure your computer | Hardware | Printers", delete the printer, then add it again. Once I do that, it works fine, for a few hours or a few days. How can I diagnose the problem, or fix this? The customer and end-users are getting very annoyed, so am I! I bet it's easy to define an SMB printer in > Mandrake. Share the > printer resource on the XP box and you should be all set. What do you mean "attach the printer to a machine that is not designed to be a print server"? If you had many machines at home and a single printer. What would you do? Print from only one machine? I do not intend to argue but, in such an environment or setup what other options (no additional purchase) does one have? and which ones are better suited? It just happens that I have for compelling reasons attach the 4215xi to the WinXP Pro box as it's closest to the printer location and has our phone connection. Simply sharing the HP Officejet 4215xi in WinXP Professional and trying to print to it from Mandrake Linux 10 via Samba doesn't work as one would expect! Someone on this forum suggested disabling the bi-directional thingy in Printer properties on the WinXP Pro machine. After I did that, I could successfully print from the Linux machines using Samba. https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1049637&forum_id=53439 In summary, 1. I installed and connected HP Officejet 4215xi to WinXP professional machine. 2. I shared this printer over network by right clicking on the printer and choosing "Share this printer over network". I *unchecked* the "Allow bi-directional" checkbox in the Printer properties. 3. In Mandrake Linux 10 Official, I downloaded and copied the HP 4200 series PPD file from http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-OfficeJet_4200 to /usr/share/cups/model/hp/ folder. You can rename it to hpijs.ppd and gzip it. 4. I added a new printer in Mandrake Linux 10 Official using Printerdrake. This printer's connection type was set to SMB with the details of the remote WinXP computer filled in correctly and the printer driver selected was HP 4200 Ghostscript/hpij (recommended) <- The one we just installed in the previous step. 5. Print a sample Test page Hope the above helps someone trying to install and use the HP Officejet 4215xi in a network environment. I am extremely impressed by it's small size and great features. Thanks to the HP Linux team for their valuable comments and help in this forum. Hi All, I recently purchased HP 4215xi All-in-one. It really looks small, sleek and cute for it's size and features. I successfully managed to install it on a WinXP Professional computer using it's USB connectivity. Printed a few Windows Test pages. I have a small home network of 2 other Linux computers (1 laptop & 1 desktop, both running Mandrake 10 Official). I want to be able to use my HP 4215xi all-in-one from these other and possibly more computers without having to directly connect the printer to them for printing. Is that possible? And how? After scorching the internet for possible solutions, 1. I installed Windows TCP/IP print services for Unix on the WinXP Pro box and also installed the 4200 PPD file on my Mandrake 10 laptop. Then, tried printing a Test page from my Linux laptop to the WinXP connected printer, But the printer never prints it. Altough, the printer does load the paper, makes a lot of noises and says "Printing..." on it's LCD panel. Moreover, the print jobs submitted from the Linux laptop cannot be deleted in the Windows printer queue. I have to stop the Windows print spooler service and manually delete them from C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\Printers\... What's wrong? 2. I came across this article http://mywebpages.comcast.net/heretrythis/hp3100/psemuxp.html . I haven't tried it as yet. I understand that in this case, the Linux computer just submits the real job to the WinXP computer who converts it to the HP printer specific job using it's Windows driver. And, the previous case, the Linux computer with the HP 4200 series PPD installed was trying to convert the real job to printer specific job by itself and trying to submit it to the printer. Is that correct? I apologize for the long winding post. But, I thought a brief description would help someone understand the problem and suggest a solution. Thanks in advance, Sandeep Khanna |

Hi. I just had occasion to need to consult HP Tech Support because my OJ 7130 fax function was picking up certain calls (those on some cell and cordless phones) after the voice portion of the call was already established. The tech told me to hit "*#" at the same time, and then enter 1, 2, 3. This brought me into a service menu with a whole range of functions and parameters for different things, some obvious, some not. Naturally, according to the tech, this service menu is "not user serviceable" and has no available documentation. But obviously it does. Is there a way to get hands on it somewhere, somehow? Maybe the APDK or some such? thx, jbh |

Hi Folks, I have used an HP OfficeJet 5110 with hpoj successfully for more than=20 one year on a SuSE Linux 8.2 System with vanilla Kernel Here's what uname -a reports: Linux matze 2.4.20-4GB-athlon #1 Mon Mar=20= 17 17:56:47 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux Then I got a new HP OfficeJet 5510, and since I did that I can not=20 print anymore, even after installing the latest version of hpoj 0.91=20 and hpijs 1.6 I did a complete ptal-init setup which went through ok. here's the diagnostic ptal-device mlc:usb:officejet_5500_series ptal-hp device Model name: officejet 5500 series Model number: Q3435A Serial number: MY418F20Y896 Firmware version: R0036xxNx Firmware datecode: (unavailable) ptal-hp clock Device clock: 7-Jul-2004 23:02:55 The echo service of the device is working as well and I can use the=20 scanner ! Under YaST which port are you selecting? If you want to print and scan at the same time, you must use the ptal port and not the USB port. Hello, this is to report a problem with the installation of hpoj-0.91 on my mandrake 9.1 (I wanted to install this in order to get my new HP PSC 1210 running). When running 'make' in the hpoj-0.91 directory, the following command caused many error messages: g++ -lusb -o ptal-mlcd ExMgr.o ParPort.o transport/ExTransport.o transport/ExMlcTransport.o transport/ExMlcCommandChannel.o A friend of mine (who knows Linux much better than me) told me to run this command alone on the command line with an extra -lusb added to it, and then it worked ! I then ran once more 'make' followed by 'make install', and everything is fine now. Hello! I'm new to this list. I've got some huge problems using the hpoj drivers on Suse 9.0 pro with my PSC 950. My english is not the best, so I hope you can understand my problems... A longer time ago I compiled the 0.90 drivers and installed them. Everything worked fine...almost. The printer worked, even the card reader (using mtools). But as soon as I scan something, the printer doesn't work anymore. I had to plug the USB cord off and in again, then setup the printer again with YaST2. Then I was able to print again. After some frustration because of this I decided to install the 0.91 version of the drivers. Now I can scan, use the card readers but I'm not able to print anymore. Only if I plug off the USB cord for some seconds and then plug it in again (hardware detection), then setup the printer with YaST2, I can print..... After a reboot the printer doesn't work anymore and ptal-mlcd shows an error message at boot. Then I have to do all the same things again... I think this is an issue with the drivers..........isn't it? Best regards Christian |

The kernel is : 2.4.20-8d (default installation kernel) The configure/make/make install cycle for both hpoj and hpijs report no errors. I have tried printing via cups/hpijs and this seems to work OK. A side issue which probably doesn't help (but puzzles me nonetheless): I can't seem to print to the same printer (connected to a windows PC) via samba - the printer seems to initalise, but then the on light remains flashing, nothing comes out of the printer. The only option is to turn the printer off and then the PC displays an error message "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)". I don't know if this is a problem with my hpijs setup or if it's a samba issue. I'm trying to get a PSC1100 configured in YellowDog 3.0. ptal-init setup probes for usb devices, but doesn't find any. cat /proc/bus/usb/devices shows the printer is detected, lsmod shows the printer module is loaded, but usbcore and usb-ohci aren't loaded. I'm presuming usb is compile in to the kernel since USB works for storage devices and if I try to insmod the usbcore and usb-ohci modules are not found. I've had a good look round for them and they really don't exist on my system. I'm using hpoj-0.91 and hpijs-1.6 and cups-1.1.17. Any clues? Thanks john |

Hi all, I have problem with hp laserjet 3380. I can, scan and print as well. But problem is if i print from windows (via samba) from notepad. If i send document from notepad to this printer (connected to linux) and immediately send another document from linux, it will print only notepad document. And printer will not print another jobs at all. Jobs go to cups spool, but i have to restart hpoj in order to print these jobs. If i print from notepad and send another job from windows after few seconds, everything goes ok. I'm using hpoj 0.91 (mandrake cooker) on mandrake 9.1. As driver i'm using postscript. Printer is connected via USB cable. The same problem i had with parallel cable as well. It looks theat i need to put small pause between each job. But how? Thanks for any help. Peter |
