I'm using a 5510. I understand the 10 is the country code, so I don't know if it's the same as a 5550. If I had read all the directions and made SURE I specified the proper version when I used apt-get to install, it would have been easier to setup on Linux than on Windows. (Some of the earlier drivers allow scanning but not printing.) The 5510 will take up to 20 sheets through a sheetfeeder, is a good printer, and does fax (I haven't tested fax yet.) Overall, I'm quite happy with mine. Hal |

Thanks for the reply. I went with an HP LaserJet 1300 for printing, but I'm still looking for a decent ADF (sheetfed) scanning solution (>10 ppm scanning speed). Are there any AiO products that you (or anyone else here) would recommend for ADF scanning with good speed and reliability? Considering the high prices of standalone ADF scanners, I'd consider buying an inkjet AiO for the ADF scanning alone. Hi, Paul and Ed! Don't know why Cory didn't provide an answer to Paul's last question (below), which would also at least partially address a concern raised recently by Ed in discussion of the ScanJet 5550 (? I think it was), as originally (on 4 Aug 04) asked by Catherine Hanson. I'll take the liberty here of reposting his direct response to the list to a similar query from me that he made on 21 Apr 04: ----------------------------- > > Sorry that I have not responded to this sooner. We have heard your > > requests but were unable to respond until now. There is another solution > > currently under development that will replace the current hpoj > > implementation. A drawer statement is a document that we can present to our customers when ever we run into issues like this. It is a vanilla statement generated by marketing and several other groups. It will state our intentions and the general direction we are moving. It will also give a timetable and some other details but will be very light on anything technical... -------------------------------- Hopefully this is of some use. Since a few (4) months have passed now and there doesn't appear to be anything on the web site that would look like to be a "drawer statement", or any further status on "another solution", maybe Cory would find it appropriate and useful to update the list or the site (or both) at this time. Cory - also, if you have access to individual email addresses, maybe you could forward this posting or your reply directly to Catherine. I didn't see that one, don't have her original email from that date, and can't get her address from the list. But it seems as though she might be interested in whatever the current status of such things is, and might not be subscribed at this time. jbh ------------------------ > Is this an RPM or source? > > Also be sure to uncomment /etc/sane/dll.conf #hpoj at the > bottom. > > HPIJS is for printing only. I have intermittent problems with my hp psc 1350v. sometimes it will hang in the middle of a print job.If I leave it alone, does not reecover. If I cycle the printer's power, which seems to be the only way to reset the printer, frequently one of the USB kernel modules will 'spin-lock'. at that point, if i try to power down the computer, that hangs, and I have to do an 'emergency re-mount' and dump power to the computer. I finally found out that the stable version of hpoj (the driver for HP officejets) is .8x. In short, when removed both hpijs (both hpoj and hpijs are needed for an HP all-in-one), then re-installed with apt-get install hpoj=9.??? (whatever -- the latest shown w/ apt-cahce showpkg) and did the same with hpijs, it installed and worked perfectly. Now if I can only get Firefox to print to this (which is the default printer, but Firefox doesn't seem to know that!), I'll be one cappy hamper. Sounds like you are on the right track... Be sure that ghostscript and foomatic are installed, as those are the only things I can think of for you to be missing... Also check your /var/log/cups/error_log file for more clues as to why the job is not being sent... Cory Hp linux printing team -----Original Message----- From: hpo...@li... [mailto:hpo...@li...] On Behalf Of Hal Vaughan Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2004 8:48 AM To: hpo...@li... Subject: [hpoj-devel] Cannot get HP5510 to print I bought a HP 5510 last night and was up most of the night trying to get it to work. (I need to have a printer working ASAP and am close to returning this and getting a Brother 1440 laserprinter because it just won't work.) I am using Libranet, so when I hooked up the printer, I used apt-get to install hpoj and hpijs. (I haven't seen it specifically stated, but I assume I need both of these, hpoj to scan and hpijs to print -- is that right?). I am using a 2.4.21 kernel. The hpijs version is 1.5. Originally when I installed hpoj (again, with apt-get), ptal-init asked me all the questions, and within a few minutes I was able to use the scanner. =20 Considering the last time I had tried a scanner on Linux was over 3 years ago, and it was damn near impossible to get it to work, I was excited. Then I tried to install the printer. I used the KDE control panel and pulled up the printer screen to install the printer in CUPS (if you haven't used it, it has a few more features than the web control panel for CUPS). The first time I did this, I admit I didn't read the instructions. I tried to install it as the 1st USB printer, and got messages that usb:/dev/usb/lp0 did not exist. I deleted the printer from CUPS, restarted CUPS, and re-installed (this time, in the printer list, CUPS specified ptal:mlc:usb:hp5510 --I changed the name to hp5510 for brevity). It installed and I tried to print a test page. I got the dialog that said CUPS sent the test page successfully, I pressed Okay to continue, configured the printer, and waited. No test page. I have uninstalled and reinstalled this a number of times. I am getting the status display (on the web control panel for CUPS) Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs. I've tried ptal-print and it cannot connect to the printer. I tried ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service PTAL-MLCD-DUMP and I get a dump (included at the end of this, in case it helps). I tried ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service echo and I cannot connect. It seems I can scan (some programs seem to have trouble, but the SANE gui frontend allowed me to scan an image in perfectly). I can use scanimage=20 --list-devices and it shows up. If I scanimage --test, I get a successful=20 report. I don't know if this printer has an echo service, so I don't know if ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service echo is a sign of the problem or not. I really want to get this working, since it would solve my scanner/fax/printer/copier needs with one shot and because I like HP products (they usually have good Linux support and are reliable), but I have to be practical. I cannot waste a lot of time on this. I have to have a printer working today, and I have to get back to my other work, so any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! I bought a HP 5510 last night and was up most of the night trying to get it to work. Considering the last time I had tried a scanner on Linux was over 3 years ago, and it was damn near impossible to get it to work, I was excited. I can use scanimage --list-devices and it shows up. If I scanimage --test, I get a successful report. Thanks! Hal Output from ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service PTAL-MLCD-DUMP: ptal-connect: connecting to device "mlc:usb:hp5510"... successful. Since there currently isn't a ppd for the 2310 I used the 2300 - everything is working really well except for one small annoyance with the paper fitted in the correct position the prints are a couple of mm off center. if I move the paper it tends to print crooked. If the printer's names are only different by the letters after the number, the printer are the same hardware (difference are the bundled Windows toys then) or very similar hardware (for example additional tray on one version). The drivers to use are the same for both versions. Note: This is only valid for HP's printers and MF devices, can be totally different at other manufacturers. Hello, This may be a silly question, but is there any difference between the HP PSC 2410 and the PSC 2410v? I know the 2410 is supported by hpoj/hpijs, but is the 2410v? I did a search for 2410v in the list archives, but I didn't find anything. I have the same problem as the one mentioned at the end of the message: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=2306606 The difference is that the problem happens almost always on my system. After I print one job and I send another one, the printer usually hangs as described in the mentioned message. I suspect that this is caused by a race condition, so whether the printer hangs or not may depend on computer speed, CPU load etc. I have Intel Pentium III 800 MHz CPU running Debian Woody. I use CUPS as a spooler. I have HP Laserjet 1220 connected via USB. When I investigated the problem, I was using sources from CVS. I was printing files using ptal-print this way: ptal-print <test.prn where test.prn was a CUPS output for some postscript file. I tried it also with Windows drivers output. The suspected race condition goes as follows: - ptal-print sends the job, job data are buffered waiting for ptal-mlcd to receive them - after sending all the data, ptal-print closes a socket and exits - ptal-mlcd receives part of the job data - as ptal-mlcd has some reverse data from the previous job (it ended with @PJL ECHO EOJ), it tries to send it to ptal-print - the connection to ptal-print is broken, so ptal-mlcd receives SIGPIPE, write failes and (in ExMgr::sessionServiceOutput) it duplicates the /dev/null file descriptor in place of the session socket - ptal-mlcd hits EOF on /dev/null when trying to receive the rest of the job and the printer does not receive the entire job I have been redirecting data read in ExMgr::pullForwardData to a file and the second job was in fact truncated there. I commented out nullDup call in ExMgr::sessionServiceOutput and everything started to work fine. I have not yet written a more elegant solution, but it seems that after a failed write to a session socket, ptal-mlcd should continue to read from the socket, but drop buffers waiting to be written to it and all the buffers that will be added to pReverseBdrQueue later. We've searched high & low on google and various linux, hp websites and have learned to our dismay that no linux support exists for the HP scanjet 5550c. Does anyone know if there are plans to support this model in the future or of any info that would allow us to use this scanner with our linux box? Thanks, Catherine |

Hello, I just bought a HP PSC 1315 and cannot print under Suse 9.1 with hpoj.0.91-115. ptal-setup recognises the printer and installs it. ptal-print works with the ECHO service but I get a ptal-print: connecting to device "mlc:usb:psc_1310_series_"... failed! when I try ptal-print by hand. Installing the printer via CUPS fails (system hangs). I downloaded the PSC 1310 ppd (and am not sure this will work) but I dont think I even get to the point where I need it. Any clues ? Hi I had the same problem and solved it as follows: 1) remove all printers from cups 2) shut down cups 3) run ptal-init setup and follow the instructions 4) restart cups 5) go to localhost:631 with konqueror (this is the CUPS admin location) and choose "install new printer" 6) when queried for the source, your printer should appear under ptal devie WITH its name ! Do not select USB or parallel, but the ptal device 7) select the model etc done. good luck WW Fujicolor wrote: > Dear Sirs, > > I have a HP G85 and SUSE Linux 9.1 running.
