Well, I must be doing something wrong. I've been fighting this HP PSC1210 for over a week with not a character printed. Running RH-9, 2.4.20-8 kernel. Was able to scan right off and the machine copies beautifully, but no print. Got the latest hpoj and hpijs, cups 1.1.17, ghostscript 7.05-32 and went through the install and setup multiple times. Always get "psc1210 successfully installed". Then print test page gives "could not connect to remote server ." /var/log/messages is full of the following two lines. Oct 12 21:08:56 bruce ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:2525, dev=<mlc:usb:probe@/dev/usb/lp9>, pid=8834, e=19, t=1097633336 Couldn't find device! Oct 12 21:09:04 bruce ptal-mlcd: SYSLOG at ExMgr.cpp:652, dev=<mlc:usb:psc_1200_series>, pid=8849, e=2, t=1097633344 ptal-mlcd successfully initialized. Reinstallations are followed by: Oct 12 21:19:09 bruce modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-188 lpr always returns the prompt immediately, but no printing. Same with lpr testprint.ps (postscript file). Hate to give up on a brand new printer, but I've heard that Epsons come with a Linux driver. bruce |

using Suse 8.1 and compiling hpoj-0.91 (including libusb, libusb-devel); with psc1340 scaning and printing (cupps) worked after installation. After reboot only scaner works, ptal-print connection failed ptal-init starts before cupps; fstab mounts the device; Any ideas? Which kernel-modules are nessesary? Joachim |

But after I selected the HP driver, it says "psc1210 has been modified successfully." No chance to choose the Foomatice/hpijs. Where did I go wrong? bruce |

After installing the driver, I ran the "Testing basic device connectivity" section of Setting up basic device connectivity <http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/hpoj-0.91/doc/setup-connect.html>. This verified the functional aspect of the USB --> printer connection. Contrary to what the HPOJ doc recommended, I used the Mandrake printer setup tool instead of the CUPS WWW tool to setup my printer queues. Every time I used the CUPS tool, I got zip, nothing. I found myself completely confused as to what needed to be done with CUPS WWW to setup the printer, the printer drake made it easy. BTW, the printers have been installed and running fine for about 4 months now. Prior to that, they would run a few days and mysteriously go offline! I have a PSC 1350 that I can't get working. I have tried deleting the installation several times and starting over from scratch for this. Everything seems to setup fine, and it recognizes that the printer is there and KDE, cups, and yast are all able to tell me that they see the printer. However, when I try to print it just sits at the processing stage forever and never prints. From the command line is says that connecting to the device failed. linux:/home/root # ptal-device mlc:usb:psc_1300_series linux:/home/root # ptal-print `ptal-device` ptal-print: connecting to device "mlc:usb:psc_1300_series"... failed! I am having an issue with my printer as of late. I am unable to print after a reboot or turning my machine on unless I first log in as root and stop cups then restart it. Once I do that printing is fine until a reboot or power down, then I have to log in as root and stop and start cups again. I came across this error in the startup log: ptal-mlcd: ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:2525, dev=<mlc:usb:psc_1310_series_@/dev/usblp3>, pid=1508, e=19, t=1097347753 Couldn't find device! I have verified that ptal-init is starting before cups. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you require more info let me know. -Michael |

Hello folks. Has anyone tried to use a Photosmart PSC 2610v with Linux? linuxprinting.org's database says that the 2600 series does work with hpoj, but before I buy a 2610, it would be nice to know if I'll be able to use it. The only connectivity that comes with this model is USB, which I don't think I'll be able to use on my win95 installation, and ethernet. This printer doesn't have a parallel port. Is it possible to print to the 2610's ethernet port under win95? Cory, will HP's hopefully-soon-to-be-released-maybe linux software include support for the 2610v? Thanks. -- Joe Piolunek |

Hi Gerard, Unfortunately, fax is not supported at this time. You can also mount the photo card readers as standard USB mass storage devices. I have a new HP PSC 1350, and I'm having troubles getting it to work. I went through the instructions on the hpoj site. It seems like everything is recognized ok because cups and other printer setup utils recognize its existence and I can get the card reader to work fine, it just wont print. I have not tried to setup the scanning yet. When I send it a print job it stays with the status of "Processing..." forever. If I do a: ptal-print mlc:usb:psc_1300_series < /dev/null or cat foo.ps | ptal-print mlc:usb:psc_1300_series It give me an error of ptal-print: connecting to device "mlc:usb:psc_1300_series"... failed! I would appreciate any help or ideas. Also, if more information is needed just ask. David |

I think it is working now. I had upgraded my kernel from 2.4.26-1-k7 to 2.4.27-1-k7. I didn't think this would cause things to go astray. I stuffed around for ages but could only get one page to print. I then got a reply from Scott (below) and decided to try kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7 but that was even worse. "ptal-init setup" couldn't even detect the printer. I noticed that the printer.o (or should that be .ko) file doesn't exist as in the 2.4 kernels so obviously things have changed. I didn't investigate too much further. I decided to downgrade to 2.4.26-1-k7 again, rebooted and bamm!!!, the jobs in the print queue started to print :) :) :) So, does anyone know what has changed between 2.4.26 and 2.4.27 to cause the hpoj/ptal stuff to not work as previously??? Is there something new I have to configure?? Cheers, Brendan Simon. Scott wrote: >I'm not sure how you've setup CUPS to deal with HPOJ. Brendan, I'm not sure how you've setup CUPS to deal with HPOJ. I had to create a whole new configuration for the class and printer so that it would talk directly to /var/run/ptal-printd/my_printer_pipe_file ..it went something like this: usb:/var/run/ptal-printd/usb_psc_1315 while ptal sets up 9 different pipes, I just use the one (not sure of the use for the others - samba perhaps?) and it works fine. If that isn't the problem then perhaps it's something else.. i'm using a compiled 2.6.7 kernel (i run debian sid/unstable) and so certain functionality that was required before isn't used anymore as everything talks through libusb now. Make sure to check /var/log/syslog /var/log/daemon.log and /var/log/kern.log (extra redundancy never hurts :) ) for error messages on the second and subsequent prints.. perhaps the answer is there. -Scott * Brendan Simon (Bre...@fa...) cobbled forth: > I'm running Debian testing (kernel-image-2.4.27-1-k7) with CUPS (cupsys > and cupsys-bsd 1.1.20final) and hpoj-0.91 with an HP LaserJet 3330. > > I have had it working with earlier kernels and cups but now it only > prints one document and does not print subsequent documents. I'm running Debian testing (kernel-image-2.4.27-1-k7) with CUPS (cupsys and cupsys-bsd 1.1.20final) and hpoj-0.91 with an HP LaserJet 3330. I have had it working with earlier kernels and cups but now it only prints one document and does not print subsequent documents. If I use "lpr file.ps" it prints fine and the queues are empty. If I run "lpr file.ps" again the printer says "Printing Document" but nothing happens. It seems the printer eventually times out but still no other documents can be printed. I even tried appending the -uel switch to the ptal backend in /usr/lib/cups/ptal but that didn't make any difference. Any ideas? I've racked my brain and searched the internet but nothing has worked so far. I'm at my wits end. Please help. Kind regards, Brendan Simon. |

I just bought an HP PSC2410, and I decided to mail the result to the hpoj as ... everything went perfectly! Connexion on USB1, power on, and then I run ptal-init setup as root. The printer was detected and a new device created (mlc:usb...). The "hpoj" line was already uncommented in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf so when I ran xsane everything started as it should. I get the PSC2410 pdd file at linuxprinting.org (I think it might be in one of the CD that go with the printer but I didn't even open them!) and copy that file in /usr/share/cups/model directory. Adding the new printer under cups was very simple. It prints rapidly and nicely, scan quite fast and, well that's not vey important but... it looks rather pretty! Only one thing, why is it not clearly written on the box that this printer is supported under linux? And of course many many thanks to the developpers of the hpijs and hpoj project as they've done a great job. Btw how can I help? I only know C and my job deals with image processing, maybe it could help. Bertrand |
