In Mdk simply plug it in, turn it on, and after that run "printerdrake" or choose the printing section of the Mandrakelinux Control Center. The print queue will then be created automatically and all software for printing and scanning will be installed (have the installation CDs handy). Memory card access should be possible via USB mass storage. A icon appears on my Linspire machines deskop for my 2355. Labeled USB Mass Storage device. It could be Mandrake and not the printer. I.e printing and scanning. They are safe to ignore. You have to plug it in before you can start to configure it. David -- This sentence contradicts itself -- no actually it doesn't. |

I just got a PSC2410 - and the installation instructions are limited to Macintosh and Windoze -which wouldn't concern me that much except where it states "Do not connect until instructed" respectively I am prompted by the installation SW - which obviously isn't possible on my Linux (Mandrake 10) machine. Can I safely ignore these instructions or is there some magic to be performed to make this work? I.e printing and scanning. Regards, Tom Heynemann |

Well, I guess I report the same problems everybody else is reporting with setting the hpoj software right now. I get my scanner to work perfectly following the instructions of the hpoj documentation. If I inactivate the ptal (ptal-init stop) I get the printer section installed perfectly, however only using the desk jet 3320 driver, not with hpijs 1.71, which I downloaded. However, once I have started the driver again (ptal-init start) at the level of the ptal-print </dev/null command I get no connection. Well, following the hpoj documentation it seems I might lack libusb support for my SUSE9.1 hp-officeJet RPM-package (this is the newest on from the SUSE-website, it solves the runlevel problem). However SUSE claims, their RPM-package is compiled just fine (TID-SuSE610 Set up a HP OfficeJet ("all-in-one" device) 12-MARCH-2004), even they do not explicidly refer to libusb. Does anybody know the answer to this one? Do I need ptal-print to do the printing with cups? Or is ptal-cups the one to use? How do I get cups to send the print data to ptal-cups, if that would be the problem? I guess, there should be somebody out there who reads this and knows the answer. So I think, he (or she) might just go ahead and write the answer down and send it out. This would relieve a lot of people from poking around with things they don't understand. With many thanks |

First, hi all people on this list. I have a little trouble with my new printer, an officejet 5510. I follow all (almost i think), steps to configure it on my linux but cant print, scan works perfecly and when i do a ptal-print it gives me a succes but ptal-mlcd gives me an error and cups sends the test page to printer but abort it and if you retry gives me a client-error. I have SuSE 9.1 profesional with kernel 2.6.5-7.111-default, hpoj 0.91 and hpijs 1.7.1 I recompile several times hpoj and hpijs and never print, but all time it scan with Xsane. If some1 could help me with that, im becoming crazy Ah.... and sorry about my english :P |

Hi, I am having issues with our HP Officejet D145 printer on Redhat 7.2 using HPOJ and LPD. We are getting continuous printouts of a document containing only a ? or two in the corner of the page, and cannot cancel it from the printer and there is no print job in the lpd queue. What makes me think it may be an issue with the print server side is that I am getting the following message continuously in /var/log/messages: Nov 19 15:11:55 phobos ptal-printd: ptal-printd(mlc:usb:0): ptalChannelOpen failed! Will delay and retry. I have tried restarting lpd as well as restarting ptal-init with no joy. As far as everyone here is aware it was working fine and then got into the state it is in now with no changes being made to the configuration whatsoever. Any help is appreciated Andy -- "You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? Just as an FYI, the hpijs driver supports 300+ devices, including yours. Picking the 1205 should not have an adverse effect other than maybe margins or something similar. Hello I'm running Linspire 4.5 and just bought a Scanning with the HP PSC 2355v today and installed the New drive r with no problems. Is there a way to get the scanning functions to work? Sane-find-scanner finds a scanner but scanimage -L does not. Is scanner functionality for the 2355v not been released yet? This is such a cool printer I'm hoping to get the scanner functionality working through Xsane. Any help would be appreciated. Craig |

Attached is a patch that makes it possible to use a HP PSC1210 attached to USB work with FreeBSD 5.3 (with hpoj of course). I used a CVS snapshot of today. If you use the patch then you can print if: * you have the ulpt module loaded (kldload ulpt). You do not need to start hpoj as the PSC is identified as an USB printer and connected as such at /dev/ulpt0 (or /dev/ulpt1, ...) or you can scan if you have the module NOT loaded (you probably have to remove "device ulpt" from your kernel configuration). Then you can use "ptal-init setup" and "ptal-init start" to launch hpoj, it will only serve the sane backend (as the printing backend is disabled by the patch). You can use /boot/loader.conf to load ulpt on startup: ulpt_load="YES" if you load ulpt on startup you can print (the PSC gets attached as /dev/ulpt, you do not need hpoj), if you do not load ulpt on startup (and you don't have it in the kernel!!) then you can scan (you need hpoj for this, the device gets attached as /dev/ugen0). In this configuration you can also setup hpoj with "ptal-init setup". Ok, the funny thing about is that you probably have to restart to change the configuration (I played around a little with kldload and kldunload but it seems that ugen0 doesn't appear after unlaoding ulpt). If at all possible I want the hpoj author to fix the problem with hpoj - I guess it's not neccessary to have the device open for scanning AND printing at the same time, probably after mlcd is set up the device could be closed to reopen it for printing(??) After starting hpoj the devices are not opened anyway (are they?). I haven't investigated closesly but I guess it requires more understanding of hpoj. So, I hope this is archived now on the net at last. Regards, Raphael -- G System, The Evolving Universe - http://www.g-system.at |

Hi all, I'm currently tracking down the issue that causes hpoj to fail with PSC devices connected on USB on FreeBSD. If anyone has some hints what could make it fail, let me know. configuration: FreeBSD 5.3 RELEASE, libusb 0.1.7, hpoj of 16th Nov 2004, PSC 1210 32 Bit Athlon CPU, I'm using a 4 port PCI card for USB 2.0 (to which the device is attached) The device gets identified at /dev/ugen0 but "communication" fails (see previous emails for details) Thanks, Raphael |

There is a rather scary and longstanding GCC bug [1] which causes instant crashes if a program defines a struct with function-pointers and that structure happens to be "packed". Why anybody would want to do such a thing is beyond me, but suffice it to say that hpoj v0.91 is doing precisely that. The current Debian/sarge package for hpoj is definitely affected (any attempt to scan an image results in an instant crash). A patch to work around the problem is attached. Perhaps the hpoj developers can tell us whether it was really intentional to have the #pragma pack(1) span all of <stdlib.h> and <xform.h>? Thanks, --david [1] http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1844 --- hpoj-0.91/include/hpojip.h 2002-07-25 02:01:24.000000000 -0700 +++ hpoj-0.91-davidm/include/hpojip.h 2004-11-11 21:19:58.775236374 -0800 @@ -131,12 +132,15 @@ float fl; } DWORD_OR_PVOID; +#pragma pack () + #ifdef HPOJIP_INTERNAL #include "../lib/hpojip/xform.h" // this file uses the above definitions #else typedef struct IP_XFORM_TBL_s FAR *LPIP_XFORM_TBL; #endif +#pragma pack (1) /****************************************************************************\ **************************************************************************** @@ -587,8 +591,6 @@ EXPORT(WORD) ipGetFuncPtrs (LPIP_JUMP_TBL lpJumpTbl); -#pragma pack () - /****************************************************************************\ **************************************************************************** * |

After spending a few late nights trying to get my PSC 2410xi to work under SuSE 9.1 and sane-1.0.15-0.pm.0.i586.rpm, I was finally successful (?) , and I *think* that this may apply to David's setup. The solution was to wander down to /lib/modules, do an 'ls' to find the correct directory for my currently running (from the SuSE updates) kernel, 2.6.5-7.111-smp, and then carefully descend into a maze of twisty passages to: /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.111-smp/kernel/drivers/usb/image and check to see if 'hpusbscsi.ko' is sitting there waiting to be loaded: modprobe hpusbscsi At that point, a 'scanimage -L' suddenly reported: device `hpoj:mlc:usb:psc_2400_series' is a hp psc 2400 series multi-function peripheral A brief 'scanimage -l 0 -t 0 -x 215.9 -y 296.926 ' seemed to induce appropriate sounding mechanical noises from the PSC2410xi, and now xscanimage seems to be willing to let me play. I haven't tried actually scanning a document yet, but I feel I'm in much better shape now. No, I don't know where this particular module is documented... HTH and very 73, Bayard, N1HO |
