Hi all, Sorry I've not been checking the inbox as often. I think you are working on a problem, which I think really is a user interface issue. The problem with song markers, is that they assume songs end, and start on a single sample boundary. Problem with that, if you think about a recording from a multi-track source like vinyl LP, is that it allows for no lead-in, no separation between tracks, and no tail-out of silence on the recording. I think the real solution is to make song markers identify not an exact sample, but rather the start of a song, and the length of the song. In the GUI, songs could be displayed with alternating highlights or anything that indicates the start of a song and its length. What do you think? I'd already tried those ideas, however with a little bit of fiddling and (mainly) looking at where Amarok tries to send things I've solved the problem. There were two separate issues: 1) On the Envy24 cards, ALSA hw: devices only work if the audio matches the device i.e. 24 bit 96 kHz. 2) Although the on-board sound is supposed to be disabled, that is device 0 and the Midiman is device 1. Therefore the correct setting seems to be plughw:1,0 James -- James Tappin, O__ "I forget the punishment for using ja...@ta... -- \/` Microsoft --- Something lingering http://www.tappin.me.uk/ with data loss in it I fancy" |

James, This might help. In GWC, click Settings, then Miscellaneous. Under Audio Device, I had to put hw:0,0 to get it to work under ALSA. I used to have /dev/oss but that seems not to work under Debian Lenny or I didn't install a module. But that alsa setting does work for me. However, I would have guessed you would have gotten an error if that was the problem. Worth a shot. I've just recently been trying to use gwc after a longish layoff. Unfortunately I'm now not getting any sound on playback. I'm using Kubuntu 9.04, with a built-from-source gwc (I've also tried the version in the repositories with the same result, but that wouldn't be usable for normal work as the logging of click removals slows it down too much for 78's). I have tried both with and without the --enable-alsa option in the configure. I suspect that the problem related to the Envy24-based sound card (Midiman Audiophile 2496) but I can't see what's wrong. When I play from gwc I get no sound and nothing shows in the PCM monitors in envy24control, but it's fine when I play the sound file with aplay, alsaplayer or amarok. Does anyone have any clues as to what might be going wrong. Hi James, Thanks for the info, I'll have a look at LV2. Not much has happened on GWC recently, because it's basically a mature application. I'm only looking at doing bugfixes at this point. Lack of activity on a project does not mean lack of applicability... gwc-lib does still need some work, but seems like I've always got other priorities these days. If I had it to do over, I would take the gwc-lib approach directly. My next project will involve restoring the "lost" frequency content in older recordings. I've played around with it just a little, but I'm absolutely convinced a lot of life can be restored to those recordings with the right approach. Hi, I know that a LADSPA implementation of GWC has been pretty much written off due to the limitations of LADSPA but I was wondering if the same limitations exist in its successor, LV2? I haven't heard LV2 mentioned much but it's supported in Audacity, which can't be bad. An LV2 implementation of GWC would also sidestep the thorny license issue concerning fftw. I am aware that things are very quiet on this project but the recent release was reassuring. I think a plug-in or library implementation would help to secure its future. Regards, James |

Hi John, I was going to get something changes with lame. That byte-swapping message sounds suspicious. Do you still see that message with lame 3.97? I did a little more investigation. I uninstalled lame 3.98.2 and used dpkg to manually install my kept copy of lame 3.97 from Etch. Now everything works! Has something changed in lame 3.98.2? Well, I am back in business for now until this gets figured out. John |

Hi all, I have updated from Debian Etch to Lenny and now started using gwc again. I encoded a couple of files, but when I went back to play them they are garbage. The size is about right, 3-5 megabytes, and when I look at the file properties, everything seems normal. But the sound is some scratchy hissing sound, no evidence of the original material. I've tried changing several of the mp3 settings in gwc to no avail, even downloaded and compiled the 0.21.10 version to see if that helps. All my previous mp3s play fine. I've checked them in audacious and in mpg123. Also, if I use lame at the command line, simply lame infile.wav outfile.mp3, those files sound fine as well. I ran gwc at the command line to see if there was any interesting output. On the one computer, (gwc 0.21.08), it shows: > jcirillo@john:/Archive/autolame/in$ gwc > Current stack limit: 8388608 bytes > libsndfile Version: libsndfile-1.0.17 1 0 17 > MP3 preset is 2 > Assuming raw pcm input file : Forcing byte-swapping > LAME 3.98.2 32bits (http://www.mp3dev.org/) > CPU features: , 3DNow! (ASM used) > Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 18671 Hz - 19205 Hz > Encoding <stdin> to /Archive/autolame/in/Chapin_Harry-WOLD-gwc.mp3 > Encoding as 44.1 kHz stereo MPEG-1 Layer III VBR(q=2) qval=5 I don't know if that's the normal expected output or not. I was a little concerned that it says raw pcm input, forcing byte-swapping. Is that right? I did another install on my laptop, also running Lenny. I tried encoding the same file as above using gwc 0.21.10: > jcirillo@john1:~/gwc-0.21-10$ ./gwc > Current stack limit: 8388608 bytes > libsndfile Version: libsndfile-1.0.17 1 0 17 > MP3 preset is 2 > WARNING: -k is obsolete. > Assuming raw pcm input file : Forcing byte-swapping > LAME 3.98.2 32bits (http://www.mp3dev.org/) > Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 18671 Hz - 19205 Hz > Encoding <stdin> to /autolame/Chapin_Harry-WOLDtest.mp3 > Encoding as 44.1 kHz stereo MPEG-1 Layer III VBR(q=2) qval=2 (then I changed a few settings) > jcirillo@john1:~/gwc-0.21-10$ ./gwc > Current stack limit: 8388608 bytes > libsndfile Version: libsndfile-1.0.17 1 0 17 > WARNING: -k is obsolete. > Assuming raw pcm input file : Forcing byte-swapping > LAME 3.98.2 32bits (http://www.mp3dev.org/) > CPU features: MMX (ASM used), SSE (ASM used), SSE2 > Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 16538 Hz - 17071 Hz > Encoding <stdin> to /autolame/Chapin_Harry-WOLD.mp3 > Encoding as 44.1 kHz stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (11x) 128 kbps qval=2 They all produce garbage! This is really baffling. I don't know where to go from here. Something changed in lame's commands? Any hints what I can try next? Thanks, John |

I was recommended to use GWC and it appears to be what I need. The problem is, I can't install it. I use ccrma on a fedora8 installation. Have anyone recently managed to install it into a similar machine? Please tell me how. Here is what I've done so far. Please help with any additional hints. When I run ./configure it ends with this: checking for libgnomeui-2.0... configure: error: Gnomeui2 development libraries not found. This is strange because if I run pkg-config --list-all It looks as if it's there libgnomeui-2.0 libgnomeui - libgnomeui I tried pkg-config --libs libgnomeui-2.0 and get a strange error printout Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable Package 'gtk+-2.0', required by 'libgnomecanvas-2.0', not found So I try PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig/ and run ./configure again This time it looks good and I go for a make, which ends like this: lgnomevfs-2 -lgnomecanvas-2 -lgnome-2 -lpopt -lbonobo-2 -lbonobo-activation -lart_lgpl_2 -lgtk-x11-2.0 -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lpangocairo-1.0 -lpango-1.0 -lcairo -lgconf-2 -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lORBit-2 -lgthread-2.0 -lrt -lgobject-2.0 -lglib-2.0 -L/usr/lib -lsndfile -lasound -lfftw3 -lm -o gwc /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgnomeui-2.so when searching for -lgnomeui-2 /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgnomeui-2.so when searching for -lgnomeui-2 /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgnome-2.so when searching for -lgnome-2 /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgnome-2.so when searching for -lgnome-2 /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so when searching for -lgtk-x11-2.0 /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so when searching for -lgtk-x11-2.0 /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so when searching for -lgtk-x11-2.0 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgtk-x11-2.0 collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [gwc] Error 1 ? /Bengt |

Hallo! First thanks for the nice gwc program ;) ! As I am comparing some audio estimation methods I wanted to ask which algorithms are used in gwc for estimation ? (as implemented in dethunk.c) Is it implemented after a specific paper, if yes could someone give me a link or point me to any other resources ? Many thanks for any hints, LG Georg |

I'm getting back into recording my vinyl as I haven't done it for a couple= =20 years. A friend plugged in one of those USB turntables (NuMark TTUSB) and i= t=20 was frighteningly easy to start recording from it using Audacity. Audacity has a feechur where you can convert recvordings from 45 to 33-1/3 = and=20 was wondering if there was a good reason to not do that. Also, Audacity has click removal and noise reduction, how's it compare to=20 gwc's? (I know... of course gwc's is better, dunno why I asked ;) ) And thirdly, any comments on the quality of the Numark's TTUSB turntable? M= y=20 turntable seems to have bit the dust and having something that doesn't=20 require an amp (or preamp) to clutter up my computer desk is attractive.=20 Although I did see a turntable at amazon that has a built-in preamp that=20 plugs into the line in of a sound card, http://tinyurl.com/ytunxz, that=20 should work OK in llinux. Hi Thomas, gwc-lib is lagging pretty signifcantly, I never got around to incorporating it directly into gwc, and there were a number of bugfixes that gwc-lib never saw as a result. The audacity folks don't want to use gwc-lib, because it relies on fftw. It is a licensing issue with fftw, the audacity policy wouldn't allow the use of fftw. I had some discussions with them about this -- I don't know if any of the audacity folks tried to replace fftw with another fft library... Thanks for the kind words about gwc. John, I can't find the magic incantation that crashes GWC. Do you have the set of parameters that caused the crash? Thanks, Jeff Jeff Welty wrote: > Hi John, > > Thanks for the bug report. Hello, First I want to say that I think GWC is great!! Before I heard about GWC I really missed such features under Linux... But because I want to try to reuse the gwc stuff (especcialy I want to get Audacity to use the denoise algorithm from gwc), I want to know how far the development from the gwc-lib is now? Is it usable to make that what I want at the moment? Thanks! lg Thomas |

Hi John, Thanks for the bug report. I'll see if I can duplicate it. I don't want GWC to crash for any reason at all, regardless... Jeff John Cirillo wrote: > You can ignore my previous post. You can ignore my previous post. This is not an OS issue. I went into the settings panel for 'denoise' and changed the FFT size to 4096 (it was 8192) and also selected both of the 'best' recommended filters. Problem appears gone. I should have tried more things before posting, but I sort of panicked because I've not used a 2.6 kernel before and I had some trepidation in installing it at all, but Sarge was not being updated and I needed the new install. Hi, It's been an awfully quiet mailing list for these past several months. I hope someone besides me is still reading this! I have been using gwc-0.21-08 for most of this year with little or no problems, which was installed on Debian Sarge, kernel 2.4.27 or thereabouts. Now I've just installed Debian Etch, which is using kernel 2.6.18-4. I grabbed the pre-compiled gwc-0.21-05 from the Debian repository and started using it. Seemed to be fine, until... I wanted to grab a noise sample from a wav that came from a cassette. The act of clicking that eyedropper button created a Segmentation Fault warning and the program exited. I tried it again with the same result. I then unpacked the source for gwc-0.21-08 which I had been using and did the configure and make. Then I ran that version. It works, but also seg faults when grabbing a section as a noise sample. Something not right here, and I don't know where to start looking. Any suggestions or maybe something I can tweak? Thanks, John |
