I didn't see a response to this portion of the mail so I thought I'd
repeat it in case it got lost in the noise. With the extraneous DESTDIR
in those files,
make install DESTDIR=/home/treacy/debs/gramps/gramps-1.1.1.cvs/debian/gramps
causes lines like the following:

/usr/bin/install -c -m 644 'AbiWord2Doc.py' '/home/treacy/debs/gramps/gramps-1.1.1.cvs/debian/gramps/home/treacy/debs/gramps/gramps-1.1.1.cvs/debian/gramps/usr/share/gramps/docgen/AbiWord2Doc.py'
