Both the GEDCOM 5.5 and the new GEDCOM 6.0 specifications are lacking in certain areas that we want to handle, so we cannot use them exclusively. When we need to import or export, the best we can do is handle the data that is common to formats (in fact, in the GEDCOM 5.5 case, if you specify a target program for the GEDCOM file, we will use the other tool's extensions to transfer some of this missing data). When we export, we can warn the user that some data may not transfer, possibly even specfying what data we can't transfer. Fortunately, with our XML file export option, any other program that wants to import from GRAMPS can have access to all of the data in the database in an easy to read format. It might be a good idea to document the file format a bit better than it currently is. Don |
