There must be some explicit conversion to latin in the Fan Chart then... There it is: the pdf generator (which interfaces with the reportlab) has str(line) statement in the rotated text method, which converts text to ascii. Just curious: if you change "str(line)" to simply "line" in line 496 of src/docgen/PdfDoc.py (or /usr/share/gramps/docgen/PdfDoc.py if you use packaged gramps), does it help?
