Bret, I have to disappoint you: gramps does not and will not run on woody,=20 unless you tweak your woody so much that it does not make sense to call=20 it "stable" anymore :-) The reason is that the gnome libraries on woody=20 are GNOME1, and gramps (everything past 0.8.1) requires GNOME2. The way=20 debian makes its releases, no new packages will ever be uploaded to=20 stable except for the security fixes.=20 Gramps does run on testing (sarge) and unstable (sid). Sarge is going to=20 be released sometime soon, and stability-wise it is much closer to=20 stable than unstable. I personally run unstable since 2000 and I can easily count all the=20 breakages I've had in the past (about 4-5). I would recommend trying=20 unstable unless you're running an absolutely mission-critical machine=20 and cannot afford a tiniest problem ever. If unstable is not an option for you, there's a good chance that sarge=20 will become stable in a couple of months. There's an even greater chance=20 (almost certain) that it will become stable in six months. If, however, you were referring to gramps 0.8.1 then it will happily run=20 on woody. But the development progressed a lot since then, so not being=20 able to run a recent version seems quite a drawback to me. Hope it helps.=20 Please feel free to ask further questions, Alex On Sat, Oct 25, 2003 at 11:38:22AM +0800, Bret Busby wrote: > I am wondering whether anyone has had any problems running GRAMPS on=20 > Debian Linux 3.0. >=20 > I am currently running (an earlier version, I believe, of) GRAMPS on=20 > Red Hat Linux 7.3, and I have found this last week, from the Red Hat=20 > site, that Red Hat Linux disappears in six months, so I am considering=20 > moving to Debian stable, the latest version of which, I believe, is 3.0= =20 > (named woody, I think). >=20 > I understand that Fedora Linux will take the place of Red Hat Linux, but= =20 > there appears to be a reduction in the number of applicable CD's,=20 > implying that Fedora Linux will lack much of what is contained in Red=20 > Hat Linux. >=20 > I am not trying to start any "distro war" on this list; I am merely=20 > trying to find whether there are any problems installing, setting up,=20 > and running, the latest version of GRAMPS on Debian Linux 3.0, and=20 > giving my reasons. --=20 Alexander Roitman http://ebner.neuroscience.umn.edu/people/alex.html Dept. of Neuroscience, Lions Research Building 2001 6th Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455 Tel (612) 625-7566 FAX (612) 626-9201 |
