<div class="moz-cite-prefix">Thanks for the question and the answer.
I have had absolute path and saw the pitfalls of being able to
change my directories or port to another computer. But didn't
think to ask and thought I would have to change manually. The
media manager did an 85% job on converting from absolute to
relative. By that I mean I have several hundred that are not
converted and show as a red x in the gallery view. I think these
are media files I added years ago as none seem to be recent.
Somne of those that failed to convert were files that I know were
added at the same time. Anyhow I am in the precess of correcting
those that did not convert.<br>
I did not realize all had not converted until I ran the media
verify tool and saw the error "no such file or directory: etc."
Pressing the fix button only gave a blink but no option to fix the
entry. So I am going through the media view correcting the entries
that were not converted. Those that converted and those that did
not look the same to me.<br>

<pre wrap="">One pro to using relative paths is that you can move your media files to
another location and you only need to change the base path in
Preferences for the new location to be recognized. The only pro I see
to using absolute paths is if you do not keep all of your media files in
a single directory tree, absolute paths may be easier to deal with than
relative paths.
I don't recall any preference setting for the path type. It is selected
using the "Convert to a relative path" check box when selecting a media
object. Each time a new media object is selected, the previous check
box value is remembered (it does sometimes get reset, but I think that
usually only happens when you create a new tree).
The Media Manager under Tools can be used to convert absolute paths to
relative or vice versa if you have a mixture and want all to be the same.

<pre wrap="">I'd be grateful for an explanation of this choice, and the pros and cons for
each. I thought I was being consistent, but I now notice that half of mine
show the file name, and half show the path and file name.
I don't recall changing the Preferences setting.
Thanks.
