Is it not the same as "Celebrant" then? > Yes, but clergy is religious and attached to specific religions. Celebrant is broader. Many religions allow ceremonies done by people who are not clergy, and atheist will certainly not use clergy (eg funeraria have a service, but not clergy). "Witness"? I guess it could be an official person again (someone who > signs marriage papers with the groom and bride) or it could be someone > who was at the event as it happened (i.e. guest). > No, witness is a requirement of all official deeds, as they can be called upon to state the marriage/bapt/... really happened. So in the sense of http://www.thefreedictionary.com/witness : *3. * *Law* *b. * One who is called on to be present at a transaction in order to attest to what takes place. *c. * One who signs one's name to a document for the purpose of attesting to its authenticity. > I am still trying to map the few roles that are available to guests, but > it seems none of the existing ones really fit. > No, guest is very informal. You will have to enter huge amounts of people to your family tree that are not related if you add all guests. Gramps does allow you to do it though, just type guest in the role field, and you can reuse it and filter on it.
