Many thanks for clear reply - evidently there's an underlying "philosophy" governing policy about how data should be inserted. This is explained in the section about Addresses in the Manual, and is also reflected in the bit about "places". BTW, a lot of "places" already exist from entries imported - can they be edited from the Places list? Many have slight variations which should be eliminated. I don't understand your suggestion about a separate db or "Family Tree" for testing: should this be opened as a copy of the original (i.e. import gedcom), or in some other way? It's a big file - over 2000 names, 1.2 MB in FTM, 272 kB as GEDCOM, and 118.6 kB as backup.gramps. Evidently Gramps stores its data very efficiently.
