Gramps does not upgrade .grdb files directly. If you install 3.0.x, after 2.x, all you will see is an empty family tree. So users might be afraid of this, because suddenly they see no data. However, they can create a new family tree, then they can import the .grdb file, which will be automatically copied, and upgraded (so the original is not changed, allowing fallback to gramps 2.x). There are some problems with this upgrade process on the copied grdb on some boxes (with /temp not accessible as error mostly). This is not a big problem as GRAMPS 2.2.3/4 (???) saves a .backup.gramps file on exit automatically, so you can import your data from this instead of from the .grdb file. The /temp access problem was further a problem of the user deleting the original environment, which on an upgrade with macports will not happen (that is, you do not delete the .gramps directory and old environment, do you?).
