Thank you Benny for offering to help with my problem. I managed to sort it out. However, in the process I took a look at GRAMPS and decided to write a report on my experiences. You or others might like to comment upon my remarks and correct any mistakes. I have attached the report as an open document file. Let me say here that I like the look of GRAMPS and many of its features. I particularly like the way in which shared data can be edited (with a warning given) from any associated window, and the way in which many windows may be left open, instead of having to close all daughter windows before returning to a main window. I have been using TMG for many years (like many, I came to TMG from ROOTS and UFT). I think that TMG is a great and powerful program with great support - if only it were not so Windows-based. I have had to run TMG via VXWorks (& Win2K) on my linux system and have longed for a linux gen. program that would match TMG. TMG is my only reason for running VXWorks. I have set up a new linux box and am eager to break free of VXWorks, WINE, etc.. So I have looked at GRAMPS with great interest and great hope. I am impressed with the support and the eagerness with which improvements are discussed and pursued. There is always a catch - I fear that I can not afford to throw away years of work in generating many thousands of citations and hundreds of sources which utilize 'split citations'. I simply don't have time to rewrite all those citations and sources. I suppose the same could be said of split memos; but I don't use so many of those. I discuss this at the end of my accompanying report. I hope that GRAMPS provides a way around this problem OR will soon. Cheers, George Legge Melbourne, Australia (but don't ask me who won the Melbourne Cup today - I have no idea.) |
