It should pop out dialogs, either saying that the RCS file has been initialized (when you try it first) or that the version has been committed. If nothing happens then something has gone wrong. If you got the "initialized" dialog first time, but then it chugs away on the subsequent runs, then either XML export is taking long time, or something happens during export. To find out, start gramps from terminal (type 'gramps' in the terminal) and see if anything is printed in terminal during checkpoint tool run.
