[Gnuplot-info] 3d points plot with colors

Hi
i have a file points.dat consisting of
lines of the form
  <x-coord> <y-coord> <z-coord>
When i plot these points with

  splot "points.dat" using 1:2:3 as points

the points are correctly drawn,
but they all have the same color (red).

Is there a way to specify that the z-coordinate
determines a point's color, for instance with a palette?

I am using gnuplot Version 4.0 patchlevel 0 on fedora fc 6
