  not so much a problem with the routine itself, as a bad choice of

Not quite.  The ghostscript bug should not affect conversion to pdf, 
because that is a conversion from one vector description to another.
Acrobat, or xpdf, would have to introduce their own separate aliasing
bug to get the display wrong.
