mouse in gnuplot

Any idea why zooming with mouse does not work if I do:

echo "set mouse; plot sin(x)"  | gnuplot -persist

?
(on linux/x86 - FC4 and FC3)

The problem came about when I was trying to figure out why zooming
with mouse does not work on octave on MacOSX (with X11 term).
There is no problem with that on linux/x86 though...

I tried both gnuplot-4 and a recent cvs snapshot.
