Not only do I agree with this, I added it quite a while ago at Petr's 
urging. There is such an option already:
	set termoption enhanced

See, for instance, the enhancedtext.dem demo file

Sure. But one has to make sure that the failure mode is harmless.
I'd like to add "set termoption linewidth <foo>", for instance,
but with the current code this causes an error if the active terminal
does not support a set linewidth option.
