I wonder what made you think it would be...

PM3D plots coloured solid surfaces.  Not grids (--> lines), not points, 
but solid-filled triangulated surface meshes.


	set pm3d explicit
	splot 'datafile' using 1:2:3:4 with points palette

should do what you want.
