not a bug.

it's the atanh function.

the lowest/highest value you can have as result of the atanh function is:

gnuplot> print atanh(-0.999999999999999)
-17.6163615864504
gnuplot> print atanh(0.999999999999999)
17.6163615864504

with
set yrange [-17.:17.]
and parametric plotting mode for mapping a proper chosen 'trange' to
something suitable
for the atanh function you get a usable result:

# maybe not the best mapping function but it works...
temp(x) = 2./pi*atan(sgn(x)*exp(abs(x)))
set samples 1000
set trange [-34.7:34.7]
set xrange [-5.:5.]
set yrange [-17.:17.]
set parametric
plot temp(t),atanh(temp(t))
