Short answer: update your gnuplot

Longer answer: That's because you rely on documentation taken from a 
different place than the program itself.  You found documentation on the 
internet concerning a version of gnuplot newer than the program you 
actually have.  Sigh... doesn't *anybody* check the built-in help before 
resorting to Google any more, these days?
