I would like to plot a 2D histogram as a map.
Until now, I have used the "pm3d map" plotting style to visualize my 2D histograms. But this is an interpolation not a real histogram, and it becomes especialy inconvenient when
(i) the binsize must be large (eg. staying for originally discrete data), or
(ii) the histogram is sparse (a lot of counts in one region and nearly nothing in others). For sparse 2D histograms it seams inpossible to put zeros invisible without having lost individual counts in sparse regions.
I have recently found the new plotting style "image" in the documentation, and it seemed - for the first look - to be exactly what I needed. But I realized that I cannot adjust the third (Z or color) axis's range. The only way to influence the color scale is to "set logscale zcb".
Then, I turned to the style "rgbimage". I have processed the histogram file to contain the desired colors. But now, there is no trace of the colorbox on the right of the plot as it was with the "image" style.
My question is:
Is there any way to plot 2D histograms (as maps)
(i) without any manipulation (interpolation),
(ii) with freely adjustable third (Z or color) axis,
(iii) with a colorbox representing the counts' values in a color-scale
at the same time?
