I think that's because you threw pm3d into the mix without actually 
needing it.  Contouring and pm3d don't mix particularly well, in version 4.0

I can only reproduce that if I include your pm3d statement.  To 
understand the reason, see "help set pm3d"

Are you concerned about the x and y axis labels, or about the tick 
labels?  The former have offset arguments, the latter don't.

If you insist on keeping the pm3d stuff, you'll have to change the '9' 
up there to re-colour the grid.

Otherwise, add a "lt <n>" argument to your splot command itself.
