True, sort of.  In the scheme I have in mind, gnuplot_x11 always retains 
the current_ map, even if there are no plot windows open.  Said another 
way, when a window closes the color map pointer for that window is 
checked against the color map pointer of all other windows *and* 
current_map.  If it is not used somewhere else, then the color map is freed.
