Hmm... so this would mean that gnuplot doesn't successfully detect all
possible "have to redraw from scratch" situations for the mouse coordinate
output area.  I've seen somewhat similar behaviour on MS Windows, too.  
The problem AFAICS is that we're currently displaying the mouse
coordinates in 'no-flicker' mode, by using XOR based drawing techniques
--- if the content of the window changes for any reason the drawing engine
doesn't know about, that approach breaks.
