[Gnuplot-info] terminal type 'unknown' question

Just installed gnuplot 4.0.0 on a Linux system (HP Desktop).

'make check' failed due to terminal type being "unknown"

I have made sure XFree86 with X11 support is loaded on this machine.

When I build gnuplot and run gnuplot I do not get a terminal type "x11" 
option (or "png" for that matter). The terminal type comes up "unknown".

Any suggestions (what did I mess up)????
