gnuplot doesn't know either.

It works just fine --- it just doesn't do what you thought it would, 
because the documentation is somewhat unclear on this.  Where it says:

--- quote 'help datafile' ---
Data separated by double blank records are treated as if they were in 
separate data files.
--- end quote ---

that "treated as if" doesn't extend to giving each sub-dataset its own 
automatic linetype increment, as actual separate files get it.  You'll 
have to address files individually or use the 'palette' feature (version 
4.0 and up) for that.
