That's what make a question a good one.

Not really.  The problem is known, and it has nothing in particular to 
do with either the terminal driver or pm3d.  It's the same old problem 
that splot layout does sometimes waste quite a bit of space, and while 
'set view map' does improve on it, it's still not anywhere near as tight 
as your typical 'plot' would be.

Ultimately, this is a re-post of an old feature request:  that 'splot' 
should honour more of 'set lmargin' & friends.
