This is because after 10 years of apparently flawless work, apparently 
as of Windows XP, Microsoft changed something in how the default font is 
determined that broke gnuplot's text window output.  We never figured 
out how to fix that, be there's a known cure:

1) right-click in the invisible window, "Choose Font...", choose a 
legible one
2) drag the text window to a useful size and position
3) right-click again, "Update [...]wgnuplot.ini".
