Here is a simple example for this problem: set style line 1 lt 1 lc rgb "blue" lw 1 set style fill solid 0.2 plot sin(x) with boxes linestyle 1 produces boxes with no border, but blue border is expected. set style line 1 lt 1 lc rgb "blue" lw 1 set style fill empty plot sin(x) with boxes linestyle 1 produces boxes with background color, i.e. nothing can be seen.
