For what it's worth, Boutell's web site says:
    "GIF support will not reappear in gd until the patent expires 
     world-wide on July 7th, 2004."

That is soon enough that we might consider not spending a
huge amount of text on an issue that is only relevant for a
few more months.  It might be better to say something like:

  "GIF images were not supported by versions of the GD library
  later than 1.4 but prior to the worldwide expiration of the Unisys
  LZW patent."
