You're right. The problem is with perl, not gnuplot.  I tested a much simpler
version of the script that didn't involve a web form; it works fine. I'll direct
my question to a perl list.

BTW, I did find a way around the problem by writing the gnuplot commands to a
file and then having gnuplot retrieve the commands from the file in batch mode.
