[Gnuplot-info] How can I put a file name onto a plot automatically?

I want to create many plots of data with many different arrangements
of options and parameters. I want to save combinations that I like
with the save command. I would like to arrange my work so that a 
printed copy of a plot contains the name of the save-file from which
it was generated. How? Or is there some other way of documenting
what, exactly, went into a plot? I'm thinking of having an environment
variable that is the string-name of the last load file, and a %format
option in 'set timefmt' that causes that string to be printed. But
other ways of doing it are OK, especially a way that is already 
implemented.
