[Gnuplot-info] Color points with pm3d?

I have successfully fitted a polynomial surface to some data points, and
successfully plotted the results as "set pm3d map." Now, if I could color
the original data points with the same pm3d colorbox scheme and superimpose
those points on the pm3d map image, then I would have a easy way to inspect
where the fit is good and bad. Can anyone think of a way to color individual
data points with the pm3d scheme? Thanks.
