[Gnuplot-info] moving tic labels

When using splot with a y-axis of time, the tic labels are overlapping the
y-axis and both are therefore obscured. Looking at the documentation for
x-tics, I can't find any setting to control the distance from the tic labels
to the axis. Am I missing something?
