I am not talking about transparency of the background. I am talking about
the style setting "set style fill transparent pattern <n>".
Have a look at demo plots 3 and 4 of
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo_svg/transparent.html
compared to the PNG versions
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo_4.3/transparent.html
But I had difficulties getting pattern-fill to work at all in SVG,
and it may well be that it still isn't specified 100% correctly.
