Hello Eva,

Same thing with ($1/1000):($3+0)

But:
plot $DATA u 1:2                                    
         warning: Skipping data file with no valid points
                         ^
         x range is invalid
plot $DATA u 0:1 plots the same as plot $DATA

But 
set datafile separator " "
gives 
plot $DATA       
         warning: Skipping data file with no valid points
                   ^
         x range is invalid

I guess that it is an issue with the formatting
