thanks a lot! This works.

I don't see though how this can make a difference, as non-parsible characters
are treated as missing values, as far as I know.

I use the first column for x-axes labels, with
   "using 3:xticlabels(stringcolumn(1))", works fine, it is interpreted as a label "1986/87" etc.
