Strange behavior with "++"?

Consider the following commands:

set view map
set isosamples 10
splot [0:1][0:1] "++" u 1:2:(1) w p

I would have expected to get a graph
of 10x10 points on a grid.

Instead, I get 10 horizontal lines of
densely packed points.

When I do this:

set view map
set isosamples 10
unset samples
splot [0:1][0:1] "++" u 1:2:(1) w p

I get 10 horizontal lines of less
densely packed points - but still
no 10x10 grid.

Am I misunderstanding what "++" does,
or is this a bug?
