I long ago gave up using multiplot due to the amount of real estate that it wasted in handling margins and spacing around graphs. I've usually ended up doing collation in a graphics processing tool on individual gnuplot graphs. There was a lot of grumbling from Octave devs about this too, who use gp as a plotting backend.
