After a little lateral thinking (and for the benefit of the archives), I 
hit upon a simple method: plot the time on its own line :-)

It worked beautifully, because the time e.g. 0600 fits nicely into the 
yrange of [0:160] (but quickly changed to, err, [0:180] when my BP 
suddenly went through the roof!) if it's scaled by 10.

Many thanks for everyone's help in the meantime, and I still need to
get back to some more replies.
