cvs update -D -d 'xxxx-xx-xx' does not work

To specify the issue discussed on the beta-list

I tried to downgrade the cvs source by

$ cd gnuplot; cvs update -D -d '2014-01-04'

However, no response appear and files does not change at all.
Am I wrong?
